Looks like she left.
on February 12, 2019 at 1:01 amChapter: Consummation
Characters: Bryan Nowak, Daisy Conrad, Joe Rosenthal, Mandy Kowalski, Mike Warner, Rachel Jackson, Robin DeSanto
Location: pharmacy parking lot, SEMME Complex
For those who still thought maybe the top and bottom panels were happening at the same time and Robin ran from one to the other, here we see Robin’s actually still here. She hasn’t left. She’s up a streetlamp pole.
And dang, what would Rachel’s journal read like at this point in the night? “met my internet crush, he’s an asshole and also his friend threw rocks at me, all in all a pretty great night so far”
“P.S. His friend also groped down his pants in front of me in public, as a ploy to try to convince me to stay.”
I have to admit, while it does make sense, I still wouldn’t have known from this page about the future/past separation; without the commentary, I wouldn’t be sure that rock was from Robin. (It’s fortune that didn’t cause serious injury…)
No Willis, obviously Robin is running between the parking lot and SEMME headquarters every few seconds despite the fact that the latter is under attack. This is what I decided was happening when I first read this at 13, and how could 13-year-old me possibly be wrong about anything?
Pretty much my thoughts, except I was 20 when I first read this.
I thought exactly the same thing, and I first read it in my late 20s early 30s.
In fact, until literally this reposting commentary, I still believed exactly that. And reading the comic, I see no evidence that actually disproves it. The commentary certainly does so, but it is entirely plausible within teh comic itself. And in character.
Something something Rock’n Robin.
The main thing I don’t get is why it had to be a future vision playing out underneath current events, rather than simultaneous goings-on. I mean, maybe this gets resolved later, but seeing as currently, all readers seem to be or have been confused, why was the vision aspect so important?
Yeah, in retrospect, it doesn’t seem that vital for Walky to have visualized like every single moment of SEMME’s final hours, especially things he would not be present for. Knowing now as I didn’t then that David was really into Evangelion really affects how I see this sequence.
The previous times I read through this arc I was kinda binging through it and I somehow missed that Robin was in both the top and bottom comics at the same time. That was probably part of why I still thought both strips were happening at the same time until my current read through of this story arc.
If only you’d have switched the top and bottom parts. Then she could’ve dropped rocks from the top panel to the bottom one.
This is probably due to commenter screening, but I’ve been reading the Shortpacked! archives and damn, the comments here are generally so much more intelligent and thoughtful than over there (with far fewer edgelords and rabid fanboys).
[Exception being that phase when people were obnoxiously posting meaningless “poems” in the comments here.]
Screening/moderating definitely has an effect, but the sheer difference in size of audience is also a major factor. I mean, I don’t know what Willis is averaging in hits on the reruns here, but it’s reruns of his at this point obscure first comic, soooo I am confident they’re nothing on Shortpacked! in its heyday or DoA now.
That, and also I suspect first-run Shortpacked had more casual readers, while most of the readers here (whether familiar with IW or not) are probably already fans of Willis’ other works. There are exceptions, but overall, casual randos tend to leave worse comments on things than long-term fans, from what I’ve seen.
You can also compare and contrast DoA’s massive comment sections, which are often pretty civil, but overwhelming.
So this later evolved into throwing toys at people’s heads?
That’s only for expressing interest in Dorothy.
