I forget — does Dorothy not actually not have a cellphone, or is she just saying she doesn’t to prevent contact to the outside world? Ehh, doesn’t matter.
He taunts him about how it’s always The Cheese turning up in times of godly intervention, and is he really gonna stand for his heavenly cred being trampled on like that?
(I think this is a few years too soon for the other possible answer of “After chatting with him a few times when trying to get in touch with Robin he’s learned the guy’s always willing to transfer you a few bucks if money’s tight.”)
Well, Walky died and then came back to life as The Cheese….
Oh, and he repeatedly mentioned Jesus when he thought he needed to to get on Becky’s good side because he met her after Ross.
*Puts necklace cross to ear* “yes, hello, Jesus, hello…. hello? Dang. Must be because we are in New York. Worked great in West Virginia. Hey Dorothy step back a few feet.”
Remember kids: Jesus saves. You a trip to the local JiffyLube.
Just at first, or do you still dislike her? Early DoA!Dorothy wasn’t that similar to Walkyverse Dorothy, and she’s only evolved further since then. At this point they may as well be completely separate characters.
There’s also the matter that this version of Dorothy is literally under Head Alien 2’s mind control, as the last two comics have demonstrated. Using Walky’s own friends as weapons against him is such a very Head Alien thing to do.
I can see the adjustment for people who started with J&W! subscription strips. Dorothy’s being mind controlled here, but she’s been positioned as an antagonist prior to this point when HAII was manipulating her through more standard ‘says what you want to hear, don’t ask too many questions’ means (if she was being actively mind-controlled the whole time, he wouldn’t have had to do the ‘what was that you just said?’ ‘Oh, nothing’ bit earlier, for example.) If you think it’s jarring going from DoA Dorothy to J&W!, it’s likewise jarring in reverse, and I could see people waiting for the twist that she was an antagonist again for the first book and change. Not now when it’s clear DoA Dorothy is a lead protagonist in her own right, but at the start, sure.
Especially since Dumbingverse Dorothy is pretty much a younger version of NoWalkyverse Dorothy (thus why she and Walky were each other’s first major love interests there, to actually explore that relationship as more than a brief AU interlude,) and both of those probably aren’t that far removed from what Walkyverse Dorothy was like at that age, before professional failures and HAII killing her parents.
(Sidenote: Exactly how evil is Dexter framed as despite his buffoonery? There’s degrees between Brain and, say, Mandy. It’d be an interesting thought experiment as to whether a HA could manipulate Dumbingverse characters by playing himself as a funny, harmless cartoon character.)
In DoA now, I don’t… not like her, but I don’t love her either. She’s just “okay”. I didn’t “get” her relationship with Walky, but her interactions with Joyce & Becky have been fun. (although Becky lays it on too thick with her “rivalry” thing.) First impressions can be hard to shake. If these people were real, I’d much rather hang out with Sarah or Amber, than Dorothy.
Well according to her monologue where we learned how shitty life was for her in this timeline, she was broke and living in a hotel. So I could certainly see her not spending money on a cellphone service (especially since she seems to have no one to call) as she tries to stretch every dollar she has.
“I don’t really believe in cell phones” was probably the first thing to come to mind when trying to think a way to explain that she didn’t have one without admitting that something is wrong with her life.
“They’re clearly a hoax. I mean, little boxes that magically transport your voice hundreds of miles away? Come on, next you’re going to tell me you believe in airplanes…”
Of course I believe in airplanes piloted by Cromagmum people from inside the hollow Earth. Those flying crosses abducted my identical twin when we were wee lads, but they never knew they abducted the wrong twin.
How exactly does Walky use Jesus?
come to think of it, Dotty DID *run* to HA(2) when she had bad news (for HA(2)) vs. calling
granted, running has more drama
I figure he means he’ll pray when he doesn’t have other options and hope for the best.
Either that or evoke Him when faced with a vampire or something.
As a handy, all-purpose epithet.
He taunts him about how it’s always The Cheese turning up in times of godly intervention, and is he really gonna stand for his heavenly cred being trampled on like that?

Primarily as an exclamation.
New Slipshine coming up?
The Head Alien of the Opera is there… inside Dotty’s mind.
shit i already made this joke didn’t i
‘Prolly, wouldn’t surprise me
yep , found it.

YOU ARE THE REASON IT LOOKS WEIRD ON MOBILE
How do you not “believe” in cell phones? They *do* exist…
Because phone bad. Maybe this Dorothy is actually a late-for-the-party boomer.
I think it was psychic residue from this storyline that made me instantly not like Dorothy in DoA.

I never read this storyline before now, so it’s weird for me to see this much less likable version of Dorothy.
