Best way to hide a secret organization or place is by simple replacing something in their name. For example: Area 69, nobody will know that’s actually Area 51.
Actually, the best way to hide a secret organization is by prominently displaying its logo on absolutely everything. I learned that from SHIELD. And Torchwood. And the Dharma Initiative. And the Autobots. And the Illuminati. And the Walt Disney Corporation (not that there’s such a thing as the Walt Disney Corporation).
It’s probably, like, some sort of reverse psychology or something. Probably.
I always assumed that SEMME’s existence itself wasn’t secret, perhaps as a scientific research organization. It’s just that the parts involving aliens were top-secret. Maybe the ties to the government too, although they could also pass themselves off as a contractor and not an actual federal agency.

Also,
I’d say SEMMF makes the acronym a little nonsensical, but I don’t remember what it stands for in the first place.
What’s SEMME? You don’t mean SEMMF, do you?
Nowadays, it’s known as “SEMMⱵ”
So anyways, why does the secret government facility have a huge-ass “SEMMF” sign on its headquarters?
So no one knows that it’s the SEMME headquarters.
… I can’t really argue against that.

Or, better yet, having an actual government facility designated “Area 51”. You can find the coordinates on Wikipedia.
Not only that, if you try to tell anyone about Area 69 they’ll just wink and say, “nice”.

Nothing, Willis just thought it sounded good.
It stands for what it’s always stood for, “Securing Extraterrestrial Masterminds, Monsters, and Freaks”.
I don’t even know what a second E would stand for, that’s patently absurd!
SEMME: Systematic Error Making Misfit F….
Well the main cast line-up has changed… does this mean the banner at the top will be switch as well?
Not spoiling anything, but Sal still has a lot of screentime in the future, and she definitely remains one of the main characters.
This IS one of the strip’s most memorable gags.
I have been waiting for this strip for months.
Little sad the page link isn’t ‘screw-semmf’
Go fifteen-year-old in-jokes.
Meh, it’s no “HuLLYWO D”
I’d forgotten this bit.
What does SEMME even stand for? Society for the Elimination of Martians and Manipulative Extraterrestrials?
