Reader convenience. Most people would go “who?” at the mention of David and Steve. Walkerton and Beef is how they’ve been called so far, and readers associate them with these names.
Oh, yeah, it’s incredibly odd. I was just explaining why she does it, out-of-universe, anyway. I doubt there’s a logical in-universe explanation, unless she is trying to separate her role as Big Boss from her role as a mother?
I think the ideal approach for that is to show a scene where she calls them by their proper names face-to-face (maybe earlier than this point, or maybe later if the author wants the audience to share in Joe’s potential confusion) so we know the other names are nicknames/a surname while these are their first names.
That still involves paying attention over time to remember that detail, but this is a story with a fair amount of continuity to pay attention to anyway so that should be find.
Given that we already know, from their visit home, that Linda is Walky and Beef’s mom, this would be itself a perfectly adequate scene for Linda to establish their proper names.
That’s… that’s your last name too. Doesn’t that get confusing?
i forget, is Beef his given name?
if not, it should be. right there on his birth certificate and everything.
His given name is Steve, Beef is his nickname because…well you saw how he looks.
It is in the Dumbiverse, IIRC.
All we really know is that’s how he was introduced to Roz.
… Linda there is not a single one of your children with whom your relationship is at all healthy.
Yeah, she acted with Sal like she raised her herself and completely ignored Beef.
I mean, if she was just like “my son and my other son are still here” it wouldn’t make sense to Joe who she was talking about.
And I’m sure that “David and Steve” was out too, because… reasons.

Wait, does Linda actually call her son Walkerton in this universe? That’s a bit odd.
Also just realizing that Beef’s actual name should be Steve Walters, then.

You’re not her mom, Linda! You gave her away!
“You get around”…says Joe.
Actually, I’m surprised there’s not a fifth panel where he tries to hit on her.
Well, Beef certainly doesn’t look like he shares a lot of genes with Walky and Sal.
In cartoons you can tell who’s related by hairstyles. Big Boss is definitely Sal’s mom.
“His name is Walkerton? That’s your name, dude!”
I kind of wish Sir Willis has used Wellington as the last name, instead of Walkerton.
Linda Walkerton showing… regret over her treatment of Sal?
does not compute
