New York gets a bad rap, I think.
on November 6, 2020 at 12:01 amShortpacked! was extremely light on references to The Huge Apocalyptic Ending To It’s Walky!. I mean, for good reason. It was a silly comic about toys, and you don’t want that hanging around its neck. You also want Shortpacked! to be able to be its own thing! But here we have Amber unambiguously mentioning the events of It’s Walky!’s conclusion. It was remarkable at the time!
Also, I really pushed myself to draw backgrounds in this storyline. Drawn from photo reference, even! I wanted there to be a good sense of place. It’s a precursor to the approach I’d take in Dumbing of Age, which would debut… eleven months later!
Remember weekend cliffhangers? Pepperidge Farm remembers.
72 what? Hours? Days? Damn you Willis!
it is always 29
So, it’s never 69?
this comic is from 1971
**laughs and snorts in an unladylike fashion**
The “Pepperidge Farm remembers” got me.
At the time i first read this storyline, I had gotten into Marvel Comics for the first time, so the silver age style captions were really exciting to me.
I’ve read this storyline multiple times before, but somehow this is the first time I noticed the “Giant Honey Bun Attacks Times Square” newspaper headline.
I imagine it’s easier to look for the new when seeing it for the second or third time
Were you thinking about DoA when you wrote this? Were the backgrounds deliberate training for that?
