mass media was very invested in britney spears’ virginity as i recall
Isn’t mass media always invested in all the women’s virginities?
Not all, some get labelled sluts long before a penis gets anywhere near them.
Being scrutinized by society/called a slut and having sex are far from mutually exclusive.
Er, NOT having sex, that is.
“Well, if she’s a virgin, she’s the first virgin I’ve seen who can move her hips like that.” –Somebody or other back at the time.
I wasn’t aware that sexual experience was a pre-requisite to being a good dancer.
I know a lot of people who have had a lot of sex and they have no idea how to move their hips. 😉
Eep! Just thought of another implication. I’m a bellydance teacher. I can assure you, we don’t teach hip work that way. 😉
(I actually remember comments like that about her from that time period, too. People can be so dumb.)
*cancels her bellydance lessons*
LOL.
The joke is the year 2000!
This whole storyline has been the year 2000.
IT IS THE YEAR 2005…
They about drove her crazy. There is a limit. Some people just don’t understand or respect that.
Think Proff. is in denial.
I recall that family guy episode, where cartman was trying to profit from that…
South Park.
There’s a really weird balance between marketing sex to kids but making sure it’s still chaste enough to market to kids.
That was probably a great burn back in 2002, now its just over used.
It was overused the second time somebody said it.
What day of the year did this originally run? Just wondering how often “twice this year” actually is.
Still 2000, July/August. This exact strip ran on the 4th of August.
Topical!
Oh, the 90s… Which I was a mere baby for being born in ’92. I barely understood what the big deal with Britney Spears was, just that she was popular.
Seriously, though, when you think about the obsessive media focus on her, it’s no wonder she went rebellious and shaved her head & stuff.

Will there be a newer poll than the Bart O'Ryan one?
