At which point I tip his chair over, step on his face as I sit down, and check my email. Then maybe play a little EQ for a day or two.
Seriously, if you take computer classes of any type in college, you are due for a shock when you walk into your first computer related job. No matter the co. they will be at LEAST 3 years behind the windows curve.
Btw, in 2000 I played EQ on a Leading Edge (ibm clone) with no hard drive and 2 disk slots. It DID have a firewall and virus protection.
Little does the rest of SEMME realize that Dina has a very successful podcast, called “Soar Like a Feathered Brontosaur to the Ground”, featuring VOIP interviews with some of the world’s leading paleontologists and frequent snark directed at Steven Spielberg. She would later bravely sacrifice herself to protect the next episode, which was still being uploaded to her Geocities account.
Large office buildings often have people communicate by email. It’s possible that, for example, Alan might want to notify Dina of something while he’s in a different section of the complex– or out in the field in a different state altogether.
It might even make more sense to do it this way rather than by phone, since phones can be tapped but the SEMME network is (allegedly) impenetrable.
Alan, not being an idiot, might not believe in SEMME’s network security though. Professor Doc definitely does, but he’s in the same building (and possibly even the same room) as Dina right now. Maybe she’s worried about missing a memo from Big Boss to all SEMME users?
She has a friend who’s a Nigerian Prince. That or her newsletters.
Just one computer for EVERYONE?
also you have to purge all the spam once in a while or they might delete your real mail you wanna save
[back in the day before INFINITE CLOUD STORAGE]
I’m starting to think Semme’s “central” computer- and indeed, entire computer system- is about on par with what my parents had at the time.
So it’s a low-end Compaq PC with Windows 98 and no virus scanner or firewall.
Seriously. I know it’s 2000 and all, but even back then my bedroom was better networked than SEMMF appears to be.
Is it 2000 still? I loose track since there is no original publication date listed…
August 2000, yeah.
As a former government employee, I can confirm that this is pretty accurate.
I assumed that’s the one computer terminal in the lab, where Alan has inexplicably been stationed.
There were probably more, until Walky happened to them.
Dina is subscribed to a Dinosaur Jokes mailing list.
Q: What’s green and purple and goes around and around?
A: Barney in a blender.
Dina : Do you ever go home?
Alex: who are you my mom!?
Stephen Jay Gould.

This is Dina we’re talking about.
I’m pretty sure her solution would involve a rope trap.

“It’ll be like I’m still around, in a way. They’ll see my radio show and think of me.”

Leading paleontologists, and also Steven Spielberg, of course.
Dina just got this neato message from a Nigerian prince and she can’t pass that up! Gt off the computer, Alex!
Gee, at least get a 2nd computer.
