Walky has shown an unwillingness to hurt Dina’s feelings. As he is young, inexperienced, and actively avoiding anything that resembles responsibility, he could easily confuse a desire to not be a jerk with feelings of love.
I don’t mean to sound insensitive but with that gravitar what you just wrote is funny as hell!
But seriously, he really does care about Dina. He may not love her though. Joyce and he have something more, but his Dina relationship keeps getting in the way of what they have.
Not sure if you went through the same but it is a classic misunderstanding a young man experiences regarding his first girlfriend. One has been sold on the idea of the “special One” and having experienced a relationship for the first time, one questions what little one ever thought one knew about love. For example:
“I’m not feeling an emotion anymore, but love is more than an emotion right?” or “If I could stop loving someone just like that then maybe I never loved them? But that would make me a liar!” or “I miss them even though there were so many bad times… This must mean that I still love them and that it was my fault that things went bad”, etc.
My first girlfriend was a close friendship that grew into a relationship, and we broke up because I went to college in a different state while she was still a senior in high school.
Walky’s first girlfriend was someone he picked literally because she was the first girl he saw who wasn’t his sister after walking away from his real crush who had just murdered her sexy clone and attempted to wipe her mind again, and she didn’t have the self-confidence to tell him to get lost, and they broke up because they were totally incompatible in every way and he dropped dead people on her.
Note that my argument is not that he loved her (though I believe he grew to genuinely care for her) but rather that he wants to believe that he loved (and loves?) her, because the alternative requires annoying introspection and challenging of his beliefs.
Had to share these two from after I submitted and when I came back to the page.
I know you don’t like this
I usually go to Sal for things like this, but
Set thrusters to go, Mr. Walk!
Mom an’ Dad are expectin’ us!
Subtle Hostilities
We’re finding Sal
So then Mike grabs Daniel
That thing, he’s–
Clear this with the new Big Boss
Whew! That was close!
Isn’t the Head Alien still attacking the City? I mean don’t get me wrong “Drama Bombs” make the narrative go ’round but there’s something a tad more important going on.
I honestly don’t recall ever seeing any evidence that Walky ever even really liked Dina.
sh sh sh just pretend so this moment will seem dramatic

Now if you put it that way …

Walky has a point in panel 2. In the middle of a fight with Head Alien is probably not the best time to talk about this.

It’s like beat poetry.
Those are some angsty titles but the angst only gets worse from here.
Where are we going, again?
You brought the BODY?
TIES!
Like who?
Gross shower drain hair!
Wait, so, why are we forgetting Joe, exactly?
Maybe he’s jealous that Joyce hanged out a lot with Joe?
Yeah, are we missing a strip? When did Joe get brought up?
A storyline or two ago Joyce was trying to date Joe. Walky’s accusing her of getting crushes (and subsequently losing them) too quickly.
“Written by a hack writer who subsists on angst and shitty plot twists!”
Well, now it is.
like hell you do, Walky.

Nothing an untimely demise can’t solve!
