I assumed what Walky was trying to prove is that it was Joyce who was just comfortable with him, and the instant Danny reappeared she’d run back to him. I think. I imagined a lot of subtext.
Oh, motherFUCKER, I JUST got it JUST NOW. In my defense, Linda’s old body was never really the focus during the fight atop the Martian Spaceship, so it’s easy to forget about it during that scene with Joyce and HA.
Don’t feel bad. I’ve reread IW! a good half dozen times over since the first time and never even noticed that was Linda’s body until rereading ahead of this site a few months back. It’s easy to miss with everything else going on, as you said.
So, out of curiosity, what would have happened to the rest of the globe had Sal succeeded in blowing up the continent? I assume ‘globe destroying environmental/climate disaster’ but does anyone have a decent guess?
Let’s assume a spherical blast, centered on Denver, that’s big enough to hit the north shore of Alaska, and everything it took out is just gone. That’s a 2,600 mile radius that has ceased to exist. Everything between the north pole, Hawaii, and Panama is gone. Sal’s crater is also that deep, taking it about 2/3 the way to the planet’s core. As the edges of the crater fall in, the Earth effectively contracts. This speeds its rotation up like a figure skater spinning, making days shorter (conservation of momentum). Gravity will also be noticeably lower due to the Earth’s reduced mass. The oceans flood into the crater and hit the exposed mantle, causing further destruction as superheated steam boils off into the atmosphere. This also cools the mantle, which also has its flow interrupted, so the Earth’s protective magnetic field may become less effective or stop completely, exposing the ground to the Sun’s full radiation. The Moon’s orbit is thrown into chaos, leading to a disruption of the tides (never mind all the artificial satellites getting flung every which way).
Basically, Sal probably would have caused the extinction of humanity.
Even if nothing happened to the rest of the world, its economy and stability is heavily dependent on the existence of the Americas, including the United States.
So, even if the earth doesn’t go kablooey or spin into the sun or flood to death, the economy, a lot of international relations, and probably a lot of social security and military power collapses and the world order is probably in for some serious changes if not collapse.

Also,
Hooray for SPITE!
Wait, what did Walky say? And how is Joyce proving him wrong?
it’s the rain?
dangit, no time to archive crawl =p
So here’s my offer
She’d never act like YOU
Nevermind! We see him!
Better traction
This stupid thing
WOW is this kinda creepy:
Call me David.
Smile!
She’s dying…
Smothering me
Just Professor Doc’s lab help
Where are YOU going?
You’ve sunk to a new evil, Mike!
Why am I here?
SLAM!
Bitter sour buttcheese!
Seven Mountain Dews
Sir! Incoming SEMME ships!
It’s crazy
Without him
The being who ruined my plans!

Yeah, I remember that, and it works. I just sorta read the lines, for some reason, as being about something that was already proven.

See http://www.itswalky.com/comic/what-you-said-to-me-in-the-rain/ and the next strip, and also the commentary on this one: http://www.itswalky.com/comic/ive-got-a-shot-in-the-dark/
It is a little hard to follow.
That bandage or whatever it is wrapped around Joyce’s head doesn’t cover her eyebrows.
I mean, do head banadages typically do that?
speaking of the bandage:
why is all her hair (at the back) tugged inside it rather than hanging over it?
So, hey, what exactly did Joyce and the Head Alien find in that container that supposedly would have stopped Sal?

Fuck, that scene’s bugged me for YEARS.

Yeah, they deserve each other.

I’m no Randall Munroe, but here’s my guess.

Yeah, that’s about what I figured. Good job, Danny.

Sal wins (for dubious definitions of win)
