Transparent setups for jokes come to mind…

For a short while when I was trying to figure out where the missing Roomies! #3 story should go, I considered putting it between the previous strip and this one.  Doing so would give a buffer for Danny’s feelings to make more sense, and there was an obvious break in the story here where anything could be inserted.  However, nobody in that Roomies! #3 story was wearing winter clothes and it makes little sense for Danny’s parents to travel several hours down to Indiana University to check in on Danny about a week before driving him home for winter break.  So.
