Why do you build me up?
on May 9, 2014 at 12:01 amThere’s Something About Mary was a popular comedy film starring Cameron Diaz and Ben Stiller in 1998.
As of this writing, the Billie and Danny of Dumbing of Age would have been two years old when that came out.
Why must you point such things out, Willis? Mind you, when it came out I was only ten, but still.
Why are you NOT bitter over Mary, Danny? She was the one who sold you out to your parents when Sal ran away!
Oh, it gets better, Joebo. The Billie and Danny of DoA are in a floating time bubble, so in a couple of years, they won’t have been born when that movie came out.
I remember writing a “Something About Mary” joke around that time myself.
It wasn’t really funny THEN, either. More like clearing my throat and saying “POP CULTURE, I AM AWARE OF YOU!”
Clearing ones throat and saying “Pop culture, I am aware of you.” might be somewhat funny, if one gets the voice right. Might depend on the audience’s mood. I’m pretty sure Rowan Atkinson or Eddie Izzard could pull it off.
You know that maybe, just maybe, something is right with the world when you have to explain a joke referencing that drek (ie it’s not still part of the current pop-culture zeitgeist).
Seriously, Danny? Lying about your girlfriend being drunk is moral?
….. I’m… so old.
Oh dear God I am **OLD**
Good Going, Wilcox.
This was back during the days we were all still convinced the Farrelly brothers were funny. Those were dark times.
I never was, myself.
Indeed!
Ugh. Why’d you have to say that, Willis? My wife and I saw that movie on our first date. Christ, I’m old.
Wait, Dumbing of Age takes place in the future?
Dumbing of Age takes place perpetually in the present, regardless of how slow time passes in the strip.
It’s so weird to realise that I was younger than the Dumbing of Age cast when I started reading Willis’ stuff and the end of this semester has marked my passing them
Ugh, youths.
Did you just make me feel old with the characters in your college webcomic that started before I started college?
god damn it… now i have that song stuck in my head
why do you build me up, buttercup babe just to let me down…
i may be singing when the world ends
Wait… 1998… 2014… let me put my maths to work.
…
…
That means… this year, they’re the same age as me!
Now I feel old… and I’m practically a •child•.
Clears throat
