See? By going dialogue-less, we’re spared Robin’s tedious wedding ceremony smalltalk! Aren’t you thankful now.
And now you can focus on the important things, like Jason and Sal being Complicated.
But I wanna see Robin’s tedious wedding ceremony smalltalk
Dammit, how!?
It was the best I could do
I wanna see if she adds “-izzle” to any bible passages!
“Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh, an’ fo’ rizzle that sure happened in Canada!”
“uh we were separate then”
“Ya swapped flesh, then!”
Same.
It wouldn’t be tedious if Joyce’d let her wear a sombrero.
Why is Robin not wearing her sombrero? This ceremony should be declared void!
Robs: “YO JACE, SAL, YOU WANT IN ON THIS ACTION??”
Honestly having seen how Robin did the Mike-Amber wedding, I’m 50-50 on whether we’re missing out here or not. Pros and cons are the exact same list, naturally.
could easily be the exact same script, minus the hate-fucks
There’s no way in hell this one was as good. Robin was able to really personalize her speech for Amber and Mike because she’d been there for most of their romance– they technically first met before Shortpacked! started, but only just barely before. By contrast, she only met Joyce and Walky about a year or so before It’s Walky! ended, and hasn’t seen them very many times since then. She wasn’t around when they had most of the pivotal moments in their relationship. There’s less material for her to work with, and to put her own… uniquely touching? touchingly unique? …spin on things.
Ah, but she could talk about the time they switched genitals.
The bottom row is kinda bugging me. The way it’s staged makes it look like Jason and Sal are supposed to be looking away from each other, since he’s on the left of the page and she’s on the right. But when you look at where they’re standing in relation to each other in this strip, it’s clear that Jason is on the right and Sal is on the left (unless they’ve changed positions since then), meaning they’re looking at each other. I’m not sure if that was an intentional hidden detail? Maybe it’s just meant to indicate that Jason glanced at Sal before she glanced back, but it’s still throwing me a bit.
I like that we get to fill in the blanks for ourselves as to just what kind of ridiculous speech Robin came up with for the occasion. It’d certainly be hard to top the one she later gives to Amber and Mike– especially since she wasn’t even there for most of Joyce and Walky’s romance. Curious to see how knowing where her character arc is going to go affects her characterization here.
If you swap them, it looks like they’re reacting to Robin’s speech. But if you rearrange the panels so they go Robin|Sal|Jason or Sal|Jason|Robin, you lose the bilateral symmetry. Maybe if all their boxes were equal size? (But then that suggests their bickering is of equal importance to Robin performing the ceremony…)
That’s a nice wedding you have there.
It’d uh…it’d be a shame if something happened to it.
They’re being complicated with a capital c
