In retrospect, it WAS funny that Jerry Falwell legitimately thought the Teletubbies were somehow making babies gay. Less funny is using “gay” as an insult, but hey, at least you grew out of it.
Note how they’re not portrayed as being wrong for being sexist and homophobic. If a villain says the sky is green and there’s nothing to conflict with that, then there’s no reason for the reader to assume that the villain is lying/dumb. Which means the author has created a universe where the sky is green. That’s not a good move to make with bigoted comments.
I dunno, to me they come across as ridiculous and dumb. I mean, the comic equates what they’re saying with Jerry Falwell’s comments about the Teletubbies, which doesn’t really lead to what they’re saying being taken seriously.
IOW, to my mind this doesn’t look like an actual endorsement of misogyny, but rather a satire of it. IMO anyway.
Also: just a few strips ago, we saw Sal’s parents being brutally murdered by these guys’ boss, which makes them come across as… how should I say this?… not very sympathetic.
At the time this was written, the author was a still fairly-recently-lapsed Fundamentalist, or on his way to being lapsed. Comparisons to Jerry Falwell aren’t necessarily “this is so ridiculous.”
wait one minute! you’re telling me that the alien race isn’t some single-gender, all homosexual sentience species? whenever i see an alien species that has no visible sexual dimorphism, i always assume they are hermaphroditic species, or possibly asexual.
Wonder how Falwell fares nowadays *checks wiki*…Oops.
Is that a “He’s dead” oops, or a “He’s even worse now” oops?
I don’t recall hearing the cheers from peers that would’ve erupted if he was dead (like the Westboro Baptist guy), so it must be worse =(
not gonna verify that, already been too down lately
Dead for about a decade.
Well kill him again. You can never be too sure.
hmm, okay, to be fair I wasn’t really on social media ten years ago
He’s dead.
Why does it matter if the aliens are slightly homophobic? They’re the bad guys.
Also: the way they’re portrayed, they’re dumb as rocks.
Because when I wrote them, I didn’t write them this way because they’re the bad guys, I wrote them this way because I thought it was funny.

… I am suddenly so much more okay with the fact that these guys get killed so often.
Also, dare I ask if it’s intentional that the alien willing to trade hats with Tinky-Winky is holding theirs so that it looks like a penis?
wait one minute! you’re telling me that the alien race isn’t some single-gender, all homosexual sentience species? whenever i see an alien species that has no visible sexual dimorphism, i always assume they are hermaphroditic species, or possibly asexual.
They are sexually dimorphic, but it’s hard for humans to notice. I think that particular plot point only comes up close to the end.
See and here I thought you were making the joke about the surprise sexuality reveal of that alien.
*long, drawn-out groan at third panel*
It’s fun because the Mythbusters disproved this. Men are slightly more willing to ask for directions than women.
