The college my HS marching band rented for away band camp had 2-person rooms, with four people sharing a bathroom (one toilet, one sink & one shower stall).
On my (co-ed) floor, about 17 guys shared three showers and three toilets. The showers were fine (and this engineering student here got up before everyone else, so availability was not an issue), although the toilets got messy from time to time.
No kitchen, just a big cafeteria for the whole building.
I think sharing a bathroom and kitchen with 12 other people is all the interacting with humans beings I could handle. Only an individual room could stem the pain.
Howard’s reason for not leaving: he presumably has his own bathroom too! Actually, this is somewhat in character, isn’t he never leaving his room unless he can’t help it for a while now? So having his own bathroom would be an important part of being able to do that…
So I didn’t even notice this until I was reading through the Roomies book I got from the last Kickstarter, but I thought they shared a bathroom with Howard instead of having their own: http://www.bringbackroomies.com/comic/night-in-jail/
Obviously Howard didn’t want to leave the RA. Only guy on campus who likes Star Trek more than him. Closest to normal he’s ever felt.
I was going to say that this is Howard we are talking about, but this answer is much better.
Own bathroom or unbearable guilt?
I’m going to have to side with Joe on this one.
I think this arc is a testament to how far Willis has come in conveying emotional depth to his characters and storylines.
You mean there are dorms that DON’T have their own bathrooms?
We had one (filthy) bath/shower, one tiny kitchen and three toilets between 12 people.
Halls sucked.
Got our own individual rooms, however. Never had to share with anyone.

The beds were side-by-side, not bunk, by the way.
You got a kitchen!?

Well of course not. That would require interacting with other human beings.
I’m not sure, but I think Danny is including Billie in that “we”?
Howard does eventually find a

There’s a certain weird retrospective irony to this, since Billie is standing right there.
