This is the first suggestion that I’ve seen that Walky’s behaviour is basically because he’s trying to get himself benched and out of the fight. Some would call that cowardly but I must admit that is is something that one could honestly expect from an 18-year-old who has been drafted into a war not of his choosing.

Yeah, it does add a lot to his character. It fits.
This bit sounds a lot like Ender’s Game. Were you consciously making that connection at the time of crafting this?
