Yeah, it’s really weird seeing how early it was if you’re trying to figure out where the drama starts in this strip (The earliest possible point’s the Sal breakup, and even that’s not Sal’s Big Backstory O’ Doom). And seeing them played completely as a joke is… odd.
Like, compare their last appearance in canon to this. I mean, there are some jokes there, but WOW.
Yeah. The second time I read through these I was shocked as well, as it didn’t seem as quick the first time. As far as it goes, at this point the part I really want to see the comments on is coming in just a few strips… unless there’s other stuff that goes after they return Joe.
I like the way the themes themselves “grow up”, I mean the head alien starts being this comically evil creature and then by the end is a huge manipulative cruel SOB.
Somehow, when you archive binge the whole thing in a week, you really don’t understand the scope of HOLY SHIT THE ALIENS ARE HERE ALREADY.
And it’s all just a joke. I guess the real question is: Did Willis know already he was going to turn it into some awesome epic that would span years, or was it still just a joke to him at this point?
hahaha! As I’m fighting off Shortpacked withdrawal symptoms on a free afternoon, I’m noticing that Willis’s commentary on the comics adds its own humor.
Alex is filling out his card, and Danny is about to meet ET.
Joe, you mean.
…Damn. I knew you introduced the Aliens early but holy crap, this is what? Almost a month in? I didn’t remember it being that quick.

Get away from him, you bitch!
The rapture has begun, and implausibly, Joe is the first to be taken.
What happens when you fill out the “Computer Nerd Cliches” Bingo card?
You get your virginity given back to you… And a working Commodore 64.
So, it’s actually almost worth it…
Don’t forget the complimentary wedgies and insinuations that someone slept with your mom. Mike usually suplies THOSE.
I have a working Commodore 64, but it needs software.
Isn’t already being a virgin one of the cliches?
Oh my god. Really? This soon?

I already knew.
The first alien strips appear early, but I think they don’t reappear until Year Two.
They make a second appearance before then.
Doo Doo Doo College antics…Holy Shit Aliens? o_O
