Gonna be sick
on February 15, 2014 at 12:01 amChapter: Road Trip!
Characters: Cecilia Matz, Danny Wilcox, David Willis, guy who might be Swift i dunno, Jennifer Billingsworth, Mary Bradford, Optimus Prime
Location: BotCon
Yeah, that’s right. Â That’s me and my girlfriend in the right-hand side of the first panel. Â THAT’S RIGHT WE MET AT BOTCON. Â This is going to be one of those webcomics, the ones where they start putting the girlfriend in because they can’t help it, she is now their entire world, and then later when you inevitably break up it’s kind of weird. Â Naw, I really don’t mind, really. Â I mean, you folks might, but I myself have no regrets!
i think we see her current girlfriend soon
Is Mary throwing up a gang sign in the last panel?
Third Street Holy Rollers, represent.
Once again, Willis is trying to make Mary redeemable by having her actively ship his OTP.
Also, didn’t realize that was you and your then girlfriend when I first read this, but makes sense.
That being said, Billie sounds more like Mary than Mary here. Cognitive dissonance ahoy!
I’d say that the two have virtually swapped personalities here. Billie should be the one not minding PD’sA (albeit less chipper than Mary here) and Mary should be the one condemning it.
But then we wouldn’t get Billie in denial.
I think it fits; Billie is rather judgmental, albeit in a way very different from Mary. Billie would consider awkward public displays of affection highly inappropriate because Willis and Matz aren’t living up to her standards for how people should act in public.
Mary, meanwhile, thinks it’s sweet that two people are so obviously in love and showing it through chaste hand-holding.
Now, if it was actual pre-martial hankies panky, Mary would condemn it as immoral, while Billie would shrug and maybe make a few disparaging comments about the people involved’s a) tastes in partners, and b) technique.
At least, that’s my interpretation.
“current girlfr-” My attention is now your’s.
She’s real too! She’s not his fake “Canadian” girlfriend, either! I’ve met her, and she’s very nice.
She’s not fake. Her name is Alberta, and she lives in Vancouver…
I had to read that twice. Three times, actually. Duh!
Didn’t he say before that he once had a lesbian girlfriend for a while in college, because I think I remember him saying that (as well as backing up the autobiographical nature of DoA Joyce). Though, glad to hear that things apparently worked out for her, what with having a what I can assume is long term girlfriend (since, if she’d appear within this timeframe, they must’ve at least known each other for 14 years).
I think he mentioned it on Tumblr when someone asked about Jyce’s Autobiographical side.
That self-insert is the least distinguishable of your self-inserts.
(Also, I felt a little weird remembering this girlfriend being mentioned before. I-I think I need to cut-down on Willis webcomics.)
you think it’s weird? i was THERE. (and don’t really remember how i avoided being in these strips, honestly.)
So Mary really was a little Mary Sue. Now that i know, i can’t stop seeing it. Willis was using her as a tool to drive the story in the way he wanted.
But, isn’t a Mary Sue one who warps the story to make it all about them?
That’s the deciding factor for them, yeah, but there are also Sue Groupies. They exist to do nothing but love the main characters. Or in this case, ship them.
AKA “Soupies.”
I think you’re thinking of Black Hole Sues specifically.
It still seems weird to me, seeing a version of Mary smile and be chipper and attempt to help, even in the Sueish way she’s doing so. Again, the Mary I encountered first was the DoA version, who I’m convinced would break her facial muscles if she even tried to smile or say anything remotely pleasant.
Don’t worry, this Mary will get there soon enough.
Looks like Fortress Maximus to me. Hmmm, I should call my first son Fortress.
Billie’s pretty shy for someone who canonically hooked up with her once-babysitter 😉
But not in a crowded hall…
Wait. Wait. Wait. Is that guy holding MP-01 Convoy. At 1999 Botcon. 4 years before it was even announced!? Are you some sort of soothsayer.
It’s a Metalforce Prime. Giant PVC thing.
I’m just stuck on how it’s reckless and irresponsible to hug in public. Think of the children!
Mary’s face in the last pannel…
Billie’s complaining about people acting reckless and irresponsible, Mary’s trying to hook people up, Danny’s not wearing a hoodie, Willis isn’t wearing a Hawaiian shirt… I don’t know who anybody in this strip is!
Oh you have got to be kidding me, who tries that hard at matchmaking?
Or do I just know the wrong sorts of people?
Has anyone ever drawn the Ross’s first marriage parallel there? Or have there been too many Friends jokes already?
It took me two whole minutes to realize you were talking about Friends, further proving how hollow my claims of loving the 90s are.
At first I thought you were talking about this Ross.
