I’ve actually wondered this since I first saw this strip like five years ago- is “crown me” a regional term or something? I’ve always known it as “king me”. This being Roomies! and all I wouldn’t put it past Past Willis to have made up a term for the sake of a pun, after all.
Around here in CT too (although I think this thread is more a “where are the Roomie fans from :D). Joke wouldn’t have worked as well, and you do place a crown on the guy’s head to make him king. Maybe Danny was just sick of saying the same thing over and over?
I can’t believe I’m actually able to remember this… but I saw this punchline in an Archie comic strip too, when I was wee young. In that one, Moose crowned Archie.
Animaniacs did this one, too… except there the Warners were playing checkers with the Grim Reaper, and whacked him over the head with mallets.
You’re in good company, Willis.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Where are you from? I’m Australian, but I played checkers with my Welsh Granddad as a kid.
it’s “King Me” here in southern Ontario.
California. I’ve also lived in Colorado, Oregon, and Kansas, and it’s always been “king me” there too, as far as I can tell.

If it is, it’s not very widespread. I’m from Ohio (originally Cleveland, now slightly east of Columbus) and I’ve only ever heard “king me”.
I live in Bloomington, IN where this comic is set and I’ve only ever heard “king me” so…..
It’s definitely “king me” in Michigan and New Mexico!
Ah, here it is. Time is bendable, it seems.
Well, at least he’s not playing against Mike. He wouldn’t hit, he’d just go bang Danny’s mother.
And pay her with the checker. Not even a nickel, a checker.
ok yeah i guess you switched them around
theres not really anything to say about this one is there

I believe I also read it in an old Bazooka Joe strip.
Well, there are worse cartoonists you could accidentally plagiarized.
Bruce Tinsley, for instance.
Huh, not any C&H strip I read, but whatevski.
I think it’s “crown me” mostly because “king me” doesn’t have a double meaning of “hit me on the head”.
I honestly have never read Calvin and Hobbes… Newspaper comics differ from region to region and were never in the region I lived.
