The Last Roomies! Story Ever, Promise: Page 1

This is it: The beginning of the final content on this Walkyverse rerun site. Back in 2013-ish, I wanted to create some new content for Roomies! Book 2, and as it was roughly the 15th anniversary of Ruth’s introduction, I thought I’d write a Ruth-full Epilogue of sorts. And this is it! It’s 7 pages. This site completes its run December 23.
It was the first time I’d come back to write some of these characters as their original Walkyverse incarnations after a long while, so it was kind of a trip! Like, what kind of Ruth even is this.
“who’s that”
“NOBODY I’M NOT LOOKING AT ANYONE AND I’LL YELL AS MUCH AT THE TOP OF MY VOICE TOTES INCONSPICUOUS YO”
“And then maybe you’ll have a kid with said next girl who comes along, and then he’ll come back from the future, and take the girl you’re currently staring at back to his time!”
“…”
“…okay, so Howard may have roped me into a time travel movie marathon.”
It had a good run, but Roomies never did want to live forever.
Time it wasn’t here.
Seriously, this Ruth is WEIRD. Like, what’s Ruth doing being an inspiring mentor type?
Also, huh, I think this might be the only material that’s new to me. Though maybe I just don’t remember it, 2013 was… not a good year for me.
“You’ll grow as a person or I’m taking your femurs.”
This is the comment I came here for.
Now that’s just counterproductive. If anything, removing one’s femurs would make them shrink, not grow.
Dang, if I remember it correctly the last page of this story is gonna be a weird one to be the front page of this site for all eternity.
dab?
Ha ha oh jeez I hadn’t thought of that
Yeah… I hope this is something that’s new to me and not the story I think it is.
“Don’t worry, Walky, your kid will make up for it.”
Unironically, I feel like that’s a really interesting relationship for a potential sequel to explore.
Like, for starters, there’s the fact that Machete knows erased memories tend to come back, but it’s not clear whether Dorothy knows this or not. A relationship where one party literally has not only the power to mess with the other’s mind but the knowledge that he likely will have to do so? There’s all sorts of ways that could strain their relationship, in the glorious tradition of Willis’ characters completely fucking themselves over. Not that I think Machete would ever actually abuse his powers to assault someone, but the fact that he could would be an albatross around his neck.
Then there’s the fact that wiping someone’s mind enough times will cause them to become immune to mind wipes, which Machete cited as a factor that gave him his power set in the first place. Dorothy isn’t just at risk of being taken over by the Head Alien at any moment and needing Machete to return her to normal– she’s living on borrowed time. After a certain number of take-overs, it’ll be impossible to erase the Head Alien from her mind. Watching her realize that and attempting to cope with this knowledge would be fucking heartbreaking, but knowing Willis probably heartbreaking in a good way.
Even before all of that, there’s the basic question of how Dorothy would react to the idea of her ex’s kid being into her in the first place. Especially when that kid looks an awful lot like Joyce as well.
Quick, Walky, hurl a toy at her head!
What kind of Ruth? A very creepy Ruth.
Seriously, is she high? Or is this just “I’m depressed but I don’t want anyone to know so I’ll smile a lot except I don’t really know how smiling works”?
I suspect ‘hiding the depression’ Ruth is the Ruth we have here.
I gotta say if people are using the dropdown navigation–and they kinda have to because the one on the archive page is straight-up broken–some very counterintuitive choices have been made in terms of story placement.
Ruth’s being suspiciously nice. Must be because she’s craving femurs and is trying to lull Walky into a false sense of security before she goes for his femurs.
Re-run Shortpacked! next??? Please?!
It’s really weird seeing Ruth be openly nice instead of going about it in the weirdest roundabout way
C’mon Willis, commemorate this momentous occasion with a new Walkyverse mini-story. The promise was this would be the last Roomies! story ever, but what about an It’s Walky one!? Hm?
Yeah, this Ruth is … surprising.
Also, always in favour of Giant-Sized X-Men #1 homage covers.
Almost all of the Walkyverse book covers are homages to something, even if that something is “an old piece of Roomies! website art,” as the case is with Roomies! Book 1. The five Shortpacked! books are homages to, in order, Back to the Future, Star Wars (the original), an old G.I. Joe catalog, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Batman Begins. No clue if the It’s Walky! Book 1 cover is a reference to anything of not.
Like the subscription strips, this last Roomies story is entirely new to me.
Did Roomies Book 2 really come out in 2013? Hoo boy. That’s a lot longer than it feels like.
Oh man… only a week left? Am I just going to have one less webcomic to read every day?
All right: I’m ready for the final story!
