Assuming the memories don’t resurface and overwhelm Dorothy again, this… might actually be more permanent than any other time he’s been killed. Even disregarding the whole comic-ending thing.
Like, usually people’s brainwaves persist in the Walkyverse after their death. It’s where Head Alien went the first and second time he died.
That’s seemingly the entire basis of how Martian Resurrection works– reuniting those brainwaves bouncing around space with a new body matching the old one. Or, in this case, downloading these brainwaves into Dorothy.
This time, though? Head Alien’s brainwaves don’t persist after death because nobody physically dies here. Head Alien, all of his memories and all of his thoughts, doesn’t escape back into that mental space. He’s just… erased. Seemingly for good.
It’s done in a way that sort of seems anti-climactic… but considering J&W was started largely out of a need for money, after what had been intended to be the final ending, it’s almost kind of perfect.
Not quite sure what you mean about Headorothy’s face in Panel 3, but everyone’s their own worst critic.
My interpretation is that brainwaves aren’t as easily erased as memories so machete cutting out the last few hours only severed HA’s connection to the rest of the brain. HA’s still in there, he’s just locked away unable to escape for now.
Also I think what David means about Headorothy’s expression is that it doesn’t seem like an expression HA would pull.
Last few hours does not seem enough to me. Walky was missing for more than that, and Dorothy was already going downhill at his abduction. Last few days (i.e. ’til before her augmentation) would be a safer amount to delete.
walky: “th’last few HOURS? is that even long enough ago that you erased the bit with the wrecked car? ‘cuz it seems like ha has been in dorothy’s head for months and ha2 was in her head for months before that, you’d really have to take about a year off her life to make sure he was out”
machete: “naw i’m sure it’s fine”
joyce: “like, i thought you were going to remove all memories of alien voices in her head so he had nothing to grow back from, you said you had to be super careful but it sure seems like you just hacked away in there randomly”
machete: “and THAT’S why they call me machete, not scalpel” [theme music]
Feel like “Scalpel” would be more appropriate
prob had to hack it for a while yuk yuk
The unkindest cut.
There’s dozens more appropriate names but unfortunately they were all taken.
Yeah, I was gonna say.
Machetes are not known for precision cutting.
Or for being useful for brain surgery.
I mean the way popular conception of medicine is going people will be demanding machetes in the operating room by 2030.
the phrase “like doing brain surgery with a machete” comes to mind
He got his nickname before he had a chance to refine his skills. In for an hour, in for a decade.
I never see surgeons use machetes in precise matters
And I thought Walky just didn’t have a machete in his hand while naming him
*Plays “Like A Surgeon” by Weird Al Yankovic on the hacked Muzak*
I’m glad I wasn’t the only person who thought of that song from this strip.
Is this a “There is no Episode 1” reference?
He’s called that because he’s big into the Star Wars machete cut.
And here I was hoping it would be after the Portuguese musical instrument. They never get noticed.
I don’t know many surgens who uses a machete for a brain operation.

I think it’s more shunting him out of the driver’s seat, I think he’s still in there
That’s kinda far-fetched
You can’t argue with Science.
I choose to interpret panel 3 as Dorothy starting to fight back against HA.

Can you imagine that from Dorothy’s perspective though? *Yawn* “Good morning, apartment. Whoops, I broke the doorknob. When did I get this strong?”
I think doing more than a couple hours would require more preparation
Danny Trejo likes this.
