One Day, Part 2, page 9
on August 28, 2013 at 12:01 amA great follow-up page from yesterday’s. Going from the rapid succession of panels to these wider shots works for the pacing. I also like this page. Not as much as yesterday’s, but only because this doesn’t have as many faces.
Also, damn, parents, you should know better than to have your affairs right in front of the front door.
For years, I’d hinted that Ruth and Howard’s dad got into trouble and that Billie’s mom kind of got around. Here’s where those hints eventually collided. (Of course, the way these strips are being ordered, the reveal comes before most of the hints, at least as far as Billie’s mom’s stuff is concerned.)
Oh no, Super-Ruth has been hit in the inspiration.
Billie’s mom has got it going on.
Good Grief David Willis. You sure packed a bunch of informational emotion in these last 3 panels. And Ruth gets smacked again.
If you pretend the trauma from sex never happened, you are left with Ruth failing to watch Billie and Walky because she was having sex instead, discoveringg her father who she thought had great integrity having an affair, and what happens later with Ryan. That alone sounds like it would go a long way to make an impressionable teenager bitter and cynical about the world.
Yeah, she takes about four punches to the emotional gut in a very short amount of time. Pretty tough for anybody, let alone a teenager.
Honestly if you take away Ruth’s Hanky Panky woes this is a pretty solid story.
Just replace sex with ‘was hungry and went for a burger down the road’ and you’d still have the basis for self-loathing and regret!
Though it would be more cliche. Except the burger part – pretty sure I’ve never red a plot about ditching your responsibilities because of hunger.
The parents obviously take their fornicating cues from Matt in Ménage à 3.
Even more so if Billie’s mom is wearing a strap-on!
Dang.
“Also, damn, parents, you should know better than to have your affairs right in front of the front door.”
You know, it is weird, I had a friend who told me that her mom had walked in on her dad and her mom’s bff having an affair and for some reason I always pictured it right in the livingroom just like that in my head, even though that makes next to no sense.
Am I the only one who thinks Mr. Lesse’s beard makes him look like a Muppet?
He looks kinda like Uncle Deadly with a nose job.
The hairy one is Mrs. Billingsworth!
Huh. Just had an unfortunate thought. I wonder if Ruth ever thought about this when she hooked up with Billie? “Oh shit, I remember how my Dad hooked up with your Mom… If they had continued their relationship and got married, wed be doing incest. Just sayin.”
well, with this (Walkyverse) being a different universe than the Dumbiverse, I don’t think so. Dumbiverse Ruth is from Canada, and only moved to the States after her parents’ car accident. Billie and the Walkertons are from the US, so this having happened in the Dumbiverse seems highly unlikely.
They also hooked up in the Walkyverse. See R!Redux comics a few weeks ago.
Oh welp, I totally forgot about that. I blame having read through Roomies! and It’s Walky! on the old site, in the time after you published that strip, for this failure of my memory. Nevermind me then. And thanks for the reminder!
Sure, let’s torture Ruth in every conceivable possible way in a single day. No wonder she has depression.
I do wonder if her childhood pet will die before midnight.
Doesn’t that make her turn into a gremlin?
And wins Roomies! the Newberry Medal, don’t forget.
