Location: Ruth and Howard's mom's house
Another succession of faces! Â Betrayed and pissed. Â Ruth has severed one of her two anchors — her faith in her parents. Â All that remains is her faith in herself. Â BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE.
And that last wide shot works, too. Â See? Â These last three pages were good!
feel weird getting into parts of roomies i genuinely like, praising my own stuff is awkward
Super-Ruth considers turning to the dark side.
Compare Ruth’s face in panels 1-4 with this. Now which looks genuinely filled with hate and betrayal, and which looks like they messed your order up at Subway?
He looks like a disappointed big brother. Like he was expecting you to get first place and you came in last.
“You were the chosen one! You were supposed to bring back the gold medal, not the bronze!”
Is that a Tiny Toons poster on the wall?
Walky: Sal and Walky, no relation.
Head Alien: Uhhhhh, actually…
It’s sad when they try to make excuses for their adultery after they’re caught.
So, Ruth’s dad’s name just hit me. Third time I’ve read this strip, and I just now get it.
I R Inteligint.
ha ha ha ha
I honestly thought Mr. Lesse was being called A dick when I first read through these.
I am S-M-R-T.
I had to read through it a couple of times before I figured out that “Dick” was actually Mr. Lesse’s name.
Same here.
Everything was fine until Dick Lesse here cheated on his wife.
“This man is some kind of rodent, I don’t know which.”
And now THAT makes more sense. Yeah. I iz feelin’ smart too!
Is this true?
It’s true.
This man has no dick.
Oh, right, the last name is Lesse… So he’s Dick Lesse…
I… I am ashamed…
The “…” helped me to figure that out, but I can totally see the confusion.
D’Oh. I got that Dick was his name immediately… it just took me ’till people commenting on it to remember his and Ruth’s surname.
Mm-hm. Same here.
Oh, Ruth, sweetie.
Is that a Tiny Toons poster?
Have people started getting their PDFs yet? Is it okay for me to say that reading all this stuff now knowing what Ruth’s dad looks like is super-friggin-weird?
If you read it in a certain way it looks like Ruth’s dad is calling her a dick.
Yeah, that hurts like a bitch. Sorry Ruth.
I picked on this story a bit before, but the issues I had do look easier to fix than I remember. And one thing that works really well is the consistent voice Ruth has, the number of times you can se her trying to recover her equilibrium. She comes across as a strong soul who’s just overwhelmed rather than a weak person who was always on the brink, which might run slightly counter to the idea that she was Danny 1.0, but sure makes her more interesting and sympathetic to read about.
Great work Mr. Willis, great work.
Wait, what about her faith in her mom? I wish there was more stuff about Ruth’s folks, but considering DOA this is the most we’re going to see.
He’s Dick Lesse? Mrs. Billingsworth doesn’t seem to have had complaints.
Don’t worry Willis. We’ll get you back to critisizing your old work in no time.
Incidentally, how many of the Roomies! dads are named “Dick”? IIRC, Dick Lesse makes three…
