There are much more physics-defying solutions one could come up with. Think of this plan as scaled-down pulsed nuclear propulsion with Joyce as the pusher plate and shock absorber.
The only real problem is that if I’m correctly remembering how this scene goes Joyce only shoots once; if it took multiple shots to slow them down this would make perfect sense.

I always thought the jetpack was just super-duper flat, and was always hidden in the vest. Like a flat-screen TV versus one of the older, boxy ones.
I gotta say, I really, really love the new version of this page. The layout and art (particularly the subtle character expressions) are really well done!

I do love a good use of Hammer Space. Joyce is the queen of Hammer Space in this comic though.
She had lots of practice with that old calculator of hers.
So, how is Jason still completely unharmed? He’s been blown up, set on fire and likely experienced a sudden decrease in velocity when Joyce turned on the jetpack! Joyce and Walky are super powered so it sorta makes sense for them but he’s not.
The bowtie is the source of his durability.
Oh wow. I really like this comic. The layout, the art, the way everything comes together. Even if it’s the same basic idea from nearly a decade and a half ago.

Oh, man, I only just noticed Walky’s expression in the last panel. While Joyce and Jason are arguing about whether or not they’re all about to die, Walky is totally thinking “OMG I’m touching a girl!”, isn’t he.
