Ouch. I find the strip has a cute, toony feel. The humor has an almost innocent cornyness to it, but its to be expected from someone who just started out in webcomics. The writing got better once he started adding more drama and decided he liked making his characters and audience suffer. 😉
To be entirely fair alot of Webcomics have pretty rough starts. One I read regularly Brawl in the Family took like 20 strips to get past “Kirby Eats something and turns into something funny” for example.
Greetings from the future! I didn’t start following him until It’s Walky!, but I remember 1997. There weren’t a whole lot of webcomics yet, and most of them, at best, weren’t much better.
Sort of like a car wreak, you gotta slow down to check it out, and read about it next day, and it leaves an impression. And this one stuck around :). Glad it did, amazing like watching a moth emerge from a cacoon.
yea i saw it but now my question is is it the same exact one (joyce gave it away to golosso[ or however its spells to lazy to look it up] ??) or is it from the same manufacturer and bought independently….. bet mike stole it during the seeme days
Anyway, hooray, Joyce! By far my favorite character. I really really love her arc. Like, a lot. I look forward to watching her journey from repressed unhinged stalker into actual human being play out one day at a time for half a decade or whatever it is.
Or maybe I will just go to the other site and archive binge again.
I dunno, I quite like her introduction here. Sure, by itself, it’s just “she has a big calculator”, but overall the effect is “she seems perfectly normal”, so it’s a much bigger shock when she turns out to be bat-shit crazy in the next few strips.
As a Christian (Not a very strong one but still) I really do relate to Joyce especially in It’s Walky but we’ll get to that like…next year or 2014 or something.
The original run is roughly 2 years at 5 strips a week without the added extra content that was put up after It’s Walkey! so I’ll say that seeing It’s Walky! restart on it’s own 15th anniversary will be great.
Texas Instrument graphing calculators and their wide use in schools was still a fairly recent development in 1997. And yes, compared to the standard scientific calculators that people used up until then, it very much helped to have a good calculator.
This brings me memories of the graphing calculator one of my friends had when I was in highschool (he was in college) aparently you could program games into it, and lots of students used them to cheat on exams but aparently getting stuff on it was complex enough that if you managed you totally deserved to pass anyways XD
I like how Willis’ name is on the chair. Seeing as we find out later that Willis is an actual character that goes to this college, I like to think that he has this chair reserved for him.
I like how this one throwaway line was brought into DoA and Joyce is good at math there too. I think this is literally the only time in the Walkyverse she brings this up.
Danny, do you have something big to impress Joyce with?
IMPRESSING JOYCE IS A BAD THING
Agreed. Even though I love Joyce, my first instinct was still to scream: “NO, DANNY, RUN!”
“And that kids, is how I met your aunt Joyce”
“Aunt Joyce!? I thought this was the story of how you met mom.”
… With material like this it’s
ano wonder you managed to build a following…Ouch. I find the strip has a cute, toony feel. Cute and toony is okay. The punchline here just kinda sucks.

that calculator looks like the one in shortpacked… during that one arc Ethen takes over as manager.
Since Willis’ commentary says that he only gave the calculator a name during Shortpacked, I’m betting it is the same one.
Holy shit, it does.
Holy shit, I think you remembered that off-hand.
Holy shit, it’s tagged!

They can’t all be gems.

Er, spoilers?
Anyone whose here in all likeliness has at least a passing familiarity with Dumbing of Age. I don’t think Joyce being a nutcase is a spoiler.
Yeah, but there’s DOA Joyce, and then there’s ROOMIES Joyce.
True story, they’re not really all that similar.
(although, it’d be fair to say that of any of the characters, everyone’s got differences between their DoA-selves and their earlier incarnations)
So Henry Calculesser is it’s actual name? I assumed it was just some crazy name Galasso gave it when he went nuts.

By “Added Extra Content” do you mean Roomies! Redux? Cus those are going to be placed in there proper order just like everything else.
‘Proper order’ meaning during roomies, as Willis said it would be the best reading order.

Is it wrong that I find the large calculator amusing?
This is the point fixed in time where Danny´s life became hell on earth
