I would say it’s only today’s DOA that’s making me see a connection between the two. Even when she’s doing stuff she really really shouldn’t, this Ruth never loses sight of the idea that Billie is her charge, her responsibility.
DOA Ruth is an RA and therefore not completely irresponsible, but she goes after Billie because Billie represents everything she hates, and yet attracts her anyway. It’s only when a little responsibility enters their relationship (“We should quit alcohol together”) that the attraction begins to look healthy, but that’s because they’re on a close-to-equal footing that “I used to babysit her” is never going to produce.
Billie doesn’t have the most caring home life (absent dad, neglectful mom) so she’s a little desperate in trying to make up for that. But she’s a little confused on the distinction between “loved” and “popular.”
Ruth was sober until she smelled Billie’s breath. That got her buzzed, and tasting Billie has gotten her well on the way to drunk. She’s gonna be totally hammered by the time they’re done here.
THE REALITY OF MAINSTREAM NEWSPAPER SYNDICATION (cont)
Yesterday we began to examine the standards of newspaper syndicated comic strips, and touched on how the readership demographics create this environment.
To say that these demands have affected a noticeable change to what subject matters Roomies! can explore is a gross understatement. Some of Roomies! readers have voiced their concerns to its cartoonist, demanding a return to its roots. This would be impossible. For example the following strip is just unacceptable for the listed reasons:
Over panel 1) – 1) Suggestion of alcoholism.
Over panel 2) – 2) Profanity.
Over panel 4) – 3) Passionate kissing.
Under panel 4) – 4) between girls.
Ahem.
Yaaaay~.
a stoic climax to the longest masturbation countdown in history.
I wish I could truthfully say I’ve never seen that word order before. But I have. And I’m not saying where.
This isn’t the climax. Check back tomorrow. ^_~
Nope, still don’t see it ;P

The bolt huh
SURPRISE TONGUE-KISS!
It’s only slightly less dysfunctional than DoA!
I’m a bit lost. Do we know what Billie is talking about on the third panel?
Billie doesn’t have the most caring home life (absent dad, neglectful mom) so she’s a little desperate in trying to make up for that. But she’s a little confused on the distinction between “loved” and “popular.”
DOA Ruth should read this. It goes much better without the insults and violence.
Unexpected!
Nobody expects the Spanish Inkissition!
Yup. There it is.
’bout time.
and the fans rejoiced… ~yay~
Clearly the best response to Billie’s issues.
Remind me: in this continuity, Ruth is how much older than Billie?
*does spoileriffic math* … Gotta be four years.
Billie’s a college freshman, while Ruth’s a grad student, which puts the minimum bar around four years for Ruth to have earned her degree.
At the other end, Billie and Walky are the same age, and [SPOILERS REDACTED], which puts the maximum bar at less than five years.
So about four years.
And when I say [SPOILERS REDACTED], I mean [SPOILERS REDACTED].
…for a moment, I saw Robin in the first panel o_O
And last strip, I though billie was the one who’s drunk.
Ruth was sober until she smelled Billie’s breath. That got her buzzed, and tasting Billie has gotten her well on the way to drunk. She’s gonna be totally hammered by the time they’re done here.
This made me happy before work. <3
Here’s the commentaried one on the old site, while I’m in there.
Yay, thanks.
Reading these strips as part of the story makes it soooooo AAAAWSOME!!!!!!
I am pleased by this development
*Squeeeee*
