Though I’m not sure how the physics of the setting would justify it, that explanation does seem like a perfect fit for Mike’s behavior and the absurd lengths to which he carries it.
(Hey, anyone who can actually stomach that stuff, that’s fine with me. I’ve just had such shockingly bad experiences with their “food” that I feel compelled to share them when the subject arises.)
I’d be inclined to blame the ice, because many restaurants pretty much never clean their icemakers and/or use horrifically unsanitary practices when scooping ice into a drink cup.
Love it. Literally lol’d at the that Joyce face: and ‘Mike eats ’em’.
I can believe it and believe the reason he doses it is not just the food excuse, he loves to pick on Joyce and Walky. (although I don’t think he’s ever seriously damaged Joyce.)
McDs ice machine is the kind you pull the handle on and fill your own cup. But how they fill the machine could be a problem I guess. I’ve never had a problem with them. I’ve got kids, we go to McDs on occasion. Agree, its not ‘food’ but it’s edible so far.
I should be concerned about Mike’s intestinal integrity from eating happy meal toys.. But that would require me to feel anything for mike other than intense fear.
That too, but my memories of reading Shortpacked from many years ago are kind of fuzzy so while I don’t remember the specific things Mike has done I do know that I was supposed to fear him intensely and find him disgusting.
They taste better for Mike, because they are seasoned with Joyce’s fury.
I always knew he was an emotion eater.

They taste better because their “food” is even more inedible.
Literally every time I’ve ever had ANYTHING from a McDonald’s (EVEN WATER), I’ve gotten physically ill.
Not exaggerating. Last time I was in a McDonald’s, I had a water, because I was thirsty, and even that made me sick.
McDonald’s = literally inedible.

If the water was bad, it was probably the local water district’s fault. Or, the root cause was psychological.

What’re you talking about, Jason? He’s right in front of–wait
Joyce’s face in that last panel is some of the best art of this era….
Mike: superhuman strength, intestines of steel.

What about revulsion?

I always assumed Mike consumes his food with sheer hatred.
