Ah, Nickelodeon decided to ride the yellow menace’s coattails to the top of the ratings chart, to the detriment of everything else in their lineup. Now they’ve forgotten how to do anything else.
Or maybe that show really took off around the same time I stopped giving a crap about new cartoons. Yeah that’s probably it.
My question is, how the hell did Fairly Oddparents last as long as it did? Even when you can return literally any scenario to the status quo in under 15 seconds with a well timed “I wish everything was back to normal” you’ve got to run out of ways to get to that point eventually…
The current hamster kids show is Zhu Zhu Pets. It’s…not as good as Hamtaro. (Which is to say, I occasionally willingly watched Hamtaro…Zhu Zhu I can’t turn off fast enough.)
The hamster I had as a kid nine babies (at once). Only three survived. She stuffed 6.5 of them in her mouth when we tried to clean the cage and three suffocated. Those we buried. The other three that died just disappeared over night.
Without googling, I’d guess they don’t act like that in the wild.
I remember reading recently that the latest research is that female preying mantises don’t always eat the male after mating, just when they’re stressed. And for decades, mantises being observed by scientists had been pretty darned stressed. It’s entirely possible something similar goes for hamsters in cages.
I’ve heard the thing about stressed mantises too, but I’ve also heard that hungry females crank up the pheromones to attract more males, which makes it sound a lot like the eating is not really so exceptional.
As for hamsters, animals eating babies in an environment where there doesn’t seem to be space or resources for them isn’t so unusual either. It helps you survive in the wild; it means you save that much more protein for when you get a better chance.
“I mean, if you replace ‘had quick, mindless sex with multiple partners’ with ‘shot the doppelganger who represented everything I hated about myself in the head,’ then yes”
The series where I’ve literally only seen one episode of the show, but I was suuuuuper into those two video games. Ham-Hams Unite and Ham-Ham Heartbreak. They were super good. Still kinda good, I think, if a little silly.
Sounds like me and my relationship with medabots. Only ever saw a few episodes, but did I like the medabot game on Gameboy Advance (which felt like Pokemon and Mega Man battle network had a strange kid)
What’s Hamtaro?
*googles*
A…hamster manga, apparently?
It was literally the most popular thing ever at one point.
It’s like… what’s a popular analogue now… Spongebob but about hamsters?
How is Spongebob still popular??
eh
What small child doesn’t like Spongebob?
My 3 and a half year old nephew…he prefers talking cars for some reason

Spongebob predates Hamtaro by a year. I feel like there should be a more recent analogue even if it is still popular now.
I would say Chi’s Sweet Home or Banana but I’m p sure no one’s heard of those in quite the same numbers (I just pulled SpongeBob from search results)
BANANYA, PHONE STOP AUTOCORRECTING

I hadn’t heard of Hamtaro either until I read this strip.
I remember Hamtaro!
I also remember ruining it for a friend in high school when I told her how hamsters tend to interact with each other.
What’s special about their interaction? I never had hamsters as pets.
They’re not real friendly. Unless they’re horny. Then they’re too friendly.
Don’t hamster moms also have a tendency to eat their kids?
…yes. poor runt never survived when ours had them.

It’s common animal behaviour, under stress.
That really changes the way you look at the anime.
I had a pair of hamsters for a short time when I was a kid.
Then I had a single hamster for a good while longer, after it ate the other’s head.
How do these things survive in the wild 🤷

“Well, Anti-Joyce did, I think. Does that count?”
Oh man I forgot about Hamtaro
Little Hamsters, Big Adventures!
Ah yes, Hamtaro.

Ham-Ham Games is the best sports videogame ever made.
