I don’t know if it’s because I’m always fascinating by characters who only exist to be a hate sink, but I’m kind of sad that Mary never grew in the Walkyverse, and I hope we do actually get to delve into her some in DoA.
As attached as I am to the “hiding scars” theory, I recognize that it’s not the only direction to take; Mary doesn’t need a tragic backstory to justify why she’s such an asshole, and she might never stop, but it’d be cool if we learned more about her.
If you read Willis’ comments from the strips where he introduced Mary, apparently she was originally supposed to be a bit of a Mary Sue, far from a hate sink. It’s just that Willis realized pretty early on that she was actually terrible.
I kinda pity Mary. She’s a contrast to all of the Willis characters that came from insanely fundamentalist backgrounds and managed to evolve into mostly sane functioning adults. On the other hand, Mary came from an insanely fundamentalist background and wound up just as messed in the head as you would expect.
I never got the chance the chance to form an opinion on Mary… As soon as she was introduced in BringBackRoomies, everyone, the Author included, was already ripping into her.
I’ve always really enjoyed this punchline. It’s such an atypical response to Sal’s rant.
Yeah it’s great, Sal goes all “You wouldn’t know how I feel” and Mary’s all, “That’s right, and I’m glad not to!”
Condoms? Mary?
Well, she got pregnant in Roomies without using those.
maybe she used condoms but just had laughably terrible idea on how they work. with no sex ed or internet, it’s easy to put one on wrong.
I was going to remark that that was a spoiler, but I forgot Roomies touched on that plot point.
And remembered that this isn’t the last we see of Mary. Dammit.
At this point I can’t remember what’s been revealed already and what hasn’t, it’s just one big ball of timey wimey comics.
I know right? the only BC she trusts is gods love

Got to agree here.
I never hated Mary, truth to be told. I mostly feel sorry for her.

Mary did grow…into a hateful, judgemental character we all know. We just forget because she changed rather quickly.

Maybe David Willis would understand.
It’s the two of them are thinking of two different things.
Mary…Don’t accuse other people of not being fun. Just..don’t
Accusing people of not having fun is a felony in your state…I think.
