Now, you might encounter my 22-year-old self after reading this strip, and say, “whoa, little kid, you are messed up in the head.” Â And I’d reply, “Sir, this story isn’t even half over yet.”
I don’t think I’d call any 22 year old a “kid”, much less a little kid. (Of course, I’d only have five years on them at this point, but I’m pretty sure you can’t be a little kid if you’re older than 13)
But what does 9/11 have to do with it? There were some pretty gorey movies before and after then. Though there were about 5 minutes in the year 2001 when certain episodes of Pokemon were suddenly too racey to be televised, but that’s dumb.
I really like how they’ve got their glasses/sunglasses on in there.
Very good question? What does this have to do with 9/11? I can’t see the connection and I’ve been looking.
As to gory: these pretty much filled the bill for blood & guts long before 9/ll.
Any horror comic of the 1940s and 50’s.
Alien
The Excorcist.
The Night of the Walking Dead.
Chainsaw Massacre.
Then again, are you talking trust issues? Like nobody trusts anyone anymore or something, what with the National Home Guard or whatever they are running things now? From open society to spy guys USA.
Still though: how does that pertain to Sal, pretty sure she never trusted anyone – let alone HA?
Yeah, I don’t get the “pre-9/11” thing either. Maybe because, 15 years on, “pre-9/11” and “post-9/11” don’t have the same sort of meaning they once did: they seem more specific to ideas about terrorism and national security and big destructive events involving skyscrapers than “It’s not acceptable to show decayed dead bodies any more” (I think I broke that “rule” sometime around May 2002).
Woah, shit.
and all *you* were gonna give her was a freakin’ Target gift card
You made me imagine the box she got in DOA as containing the far more compact remains of her foster parents.
Fandom, make it so.
Gory.
Happy belated Mother’s Day, everyone!
Weren’t they blown to pieces when HA shot their car? How are their bodies still in one piece?
Dinosaur bones in museums don’t just stay together in the right configuration magically.
They do, if they’re using Martian technology!
I appreciate that Head Alien took the time to redress them with the burnt clothing. Very considerate.
It was impressive how HA managed to cam the skull back in.
*cram
Given Martha’s relatively intact hair, I assume it was John’s skull earlier?
WHY DID YOU SAY THAT NAME???
What’s really impressive is that HA accomplished this by using a camshaft.
We all know he has ample supplies of duct tape.
Aunt Beru and Uncle Owen? Is that you?
I hope Sal appreciates that the Head Alien kept her mom’s sunglasses on so she could still look cool-y disinterested from the grave

Head Alien meticulously reconstructed those, too, you know.
anything below 26 counts as “kid” and you will never convince me otherwise
Love Martha’s sunglasses here.
This is the same deal Ra’s Ah Ghul offers batman all the time, right? And her name is Martha, too! Why are all these women named Martha?

She trusts Danny, probably. And Mary, but before she ran away and ended up joining SEMME.
Uh, because these comics were all before 9/11, which if you were around at the time was kind of a major bummer
Head Alien is an evil psychologist.
Ooooh, boy. I think I remember how this chapter ends now.

Twin towers = Twin tubes with dead parents inside.
Oooooh shit dawg.
JOHN and MARTHA
I read, and still read, Goblins: Life through their eyes, before I found this.
This is nothing.
Sal’s mom has the same name as Batman and Superman’s moms!!!! ….sorry, I couldn’t help myself.
Also yes, I wasn’t paying attention to the tags until recently…
Maybe all 3 can get in a big fight and then suddenly bond over their dead Martha moms!
BvSvS: Dawn of Ass Kickin’
Well this was unexpectedly gory
I kinda wish there was an additional datebar or something that gave the original release dates, when it comes to things like your comment about 9/11.
For reference to anyone else reading, I did some digging through the Wayback machine and this originally went up on August 21, 2001.
