YES DANNY YES YOU DID
Anyway, man, I remember Sarah saying that there was “nothing left,” which is kind of weird since I don’t think Ruth was atomized or anything, but I don’t remember her saying anything about a snapped neck, which is way way less weird but really kind of gross and maybe not say that right now Sarah.
Maybe nothing left to salvage? I registered as an organ donor, but if Ruth was crushed entirely, kinda can’t use anything. That’s what freaks me out about vaporization kinds of deaths, tho–not even EVIDENCE of one’s death? *shudder*
That truck OBLITERATED HER. Somehow the impact caused her to cease to exist.
Except for her neck, which was on the ground, snapped.
Clearly the truck actually flung Ruth into an alternate dimension, but she left behind *a* snapped neck in order to fake her own death.
Dammit, Joe, why can’t you emotionally commit to your best friend for once in your life?
Yeah Danny! How dare you!
…oh wait, JOE, sorry.
Also, obviously Sarah meant that there was nothing left of Ruth’s life.
There was a fire….. not that it would have entirely consumed a body (although it’s a possibility), but it would have rendered it unfit for an open-casket funeral.
Joe’s just rushing out to download Ruth’s personality into Ultra Car :-p
I like this.
– I’m kinda angry that Ruth chose to remove herself from the story, when it could have been asshole-Danny instead. That’s a serious case of impaired judgement, Ruth. Although I realize mopey-blasé Ruth is probably not quite the awesome character that is DoA-Ruth.
Because that’s how the difference between the two plays out – to me at least. Ur-Ruth’s depression is more a kind of attitude she likes to show off. DoA-Ruth has huge, looming, serious ISSUES.
That’s not to say that people who act like Ur-Ruth are not really depressed. It’s more that Ur-Ruth tries to act wise & mature about it – to the point where it kinda becomes her shtick. She’s not moving forward – she just keeps repeating her lines. Her case is far from hopeless, though.
‘Normally, this is where I’d say “don’t blame yourself”, but yeah, this is totally your fault.’
“You had one job Danny, ONE JOB”
I didn’t know Joe and Ruth were so close (apparently)
He just realized that with Ruth gone he’s Howard’s new parental figure. You can see his judgmental back silently shouting “This is your fault Danny! YOUR FAULT!” as he heads towards Best Buy to purchase Star Trek DVDs.
Well, she /did/ singlehandedly help him find his purpose in life, I can see his being hit pretty hard by her death.
PSYCH! No, seriously, she’s fine, she’s just in the next room. Went to get coffee. Joe’s going to get her, now.
…Man, you shoulda seen the look on your face.
Ugh Danny is terrible
Damn you Danny!
Wait, so Ruth died early on in this continuity? Or is the nothing left thing to do with the aliens that come in later?
It’s amazing to read this alongside DoA. The storytelling there is subtly done (superheroic therapy methods aside) and the characters so well rounded. To see how they began and were almost abused like this is fascinating. I can also see where the concept of the drama tag comes from.
Yep, this is where Ruth dies. Technically there was more later, with the Redux stories, but since we got those in the right order here that’s all there is.
Agreed, the improvement is unbelievable!
I understand why Danny feels responsible, but I don’t agree, and I think blaming him is slightly dismissive of Ruth. The whole point of her last arc was that she thought carefully about what she was doing and deliberately chose to make the sacrifice that she did. Ultimately, of course, responsibility lies with the truck driver, but as between Danny and Ruth, Ruth knew what she was doing, and her choice should be respected.
(I’m not saying it was the right choice or the one I would have recommended, certainly.)
Survivor’s guilt. You’re going to feel bad living while someone close to you die no matter what.
Probably meant nothing left to try or nothing left to do to save her as she died instantly of the snapped neck
So…in the continuity where Ruth is awesome, she dies early. In the continuity where she suck’s, she’s still kicking. Damn you, Willis!
(I should note, I don’t actually want her to die in DoA).
DoA Ruth is awesome what are you talking about.
I notice you felt the need to mention the alcohol. As if just the act of drinking alcohol killed her
In an accident like that they are going to get the BAC of all drivers involved. Willis actually nails it pretty good here, because police and DA’s will often have problems weighting these factors. Particularly when the “striking” vehicles (the car Ruth was driving and the truck were NOT driven by the one who was OWI)
Quick! You’ve spotted a retcon loophole! Use it before it escapes!
Well, obviously there was nothing left when Ruth transcended time and space to rematerialize in Doa. Obviously.
Her parents having died in a car crash is actually just her cover story for leftover trauma from this.
See, considering this universe has at least one top-secret organization that fakes all of its agents’ deaths, Willis could probably have retconned Ruth’s death pretty plausibly at any point up until… just before the end of It’s Walky! in all honesty. It’d probably feel kinda cheap, though.
