Well, at the time this strip would have been current Magic was running well enough, and Legend of the Five Rings. Netrunner was around, but IIRC was going out of print
The Pokemon TCG didn’t come out until near a year later, DBZ and YuGiOh card games weren’t out yet either. As always there was the Vampire CCG, and I think the Star Wars and Star Trek TCGs were around then. XXXenophile CCG was definitely around though, let the kids have at playing that one…
I have not actually watched/read/played with/inhaled any Transformers.
If I want to know what you guys are talking about, where would be a good place to start?
Beast Wars is probably a good idea, since it’s the one being talked about in the strip and it’s basically a standalone. The CGI can look fairly dated on occasion, but the writing still holds up really well.
There’s also Transformers Animated, which I haven’t seen but have heard nothing but good things about, and Transformers Prime, the current series, if you want something more recent. Tonally, Prime’s probably the most serious of the three, with Animated the most goofy one. Beast Wars is fairly serious, but also has a character whose entire schtick is getting destroyed every episode for laughs. Prime and Beast Wars are both on Netflix’s instant streaming, if you have that.
I do have Netflix, but it’s a local version which might have a limited selection of stuff. Transformers Prime is on Cartoon Network, which I have, so that’d be the most easy to check out…still, with the internet ‘n all, it’s not like there’s any big impediments against checking out any of them.
I know Rattrap was my favorate back in the day, but I don’t remember why. It’s been ages since I last saw Beast Wars.
Because Rattrap is a badass who doesn’t take shit from anyone.
Depends – how many beans has Rhinox eaten?
Awesome episode, though Rattrap and Dinobot trading barbs throughout was the best part.
As someone who only knows these guys from Dumbing of Age, this seems reeeeeeeeally weird.
Holy shit, Transformers I recognize. This never happens in toy strips.
This commentary seems familiar somehow… 😉
Kids of those days, I don’t know what was wrong with that generation. 😛
That Beast Wars is such a cool guy. He kills aliens and doesn’t afraid of anything.
(I like Tarantulus. Because Tarantulus.)
Maybe Joe should take Danny up on his offer, I am sure there are some popular “children’s card games” that are all the rage during the late 90s.

Thanks for the tips!

I liked Animated, mainly because they blow up Detroit, a lot.
Where’d you get “inhaled”? I always use “eaten”, which is an obscure Strong Bad Email reference.
Hey, since I started reading your comics (though long, long after this, of course) I actually watch Beast Wars – I know who they’r etalking about!
And yes, Rattrap seems like way more of a, “nyahaha” kind of guy than bwahahaha”
Maybe he could do “O-ho-oh-ho-ho” like upper class women and Eggman?
Wait, are 18-year-olds allowed to do this with their toys?!
I’ve been seriously missing out.
