@Jrod there is an abysmally long history of hoaky puns throughout the geek/nerd subculture. It’s kinda like a secret society handshake to be able to quickly pull out a pun in response to an innocuous event (often as snarky commentary) or as a response to another pun. The main alternative is obscure references…
Gooble gobble, gooble gobble.
I’m having trouble sorting out what I know from having read the entire series back in the day, and a number of times since, from what we’ve actually gotten to in the rerun. This is the first in-strip indication that the Power Booster Rod isn’t just a couple of delusional Aliens being wacky, right?
Checking the tags for the Power Booster Rod, one of Head Alien’s demands from SEMME back in the day (when he was still more-or-less under wraps) was to be given possession of said artifact.
That particular sequence was written in 2004 however (although set some time before this sequence, written in 2002), so at the time the strips were originally released it would have been the first indication, yeah.
Also,
About three days late, but the fireworks were worth the wait.

RARRR!
Before we take off
Declassified
Help me bury this
Two agents on a plane with a dinosaur, while one, the senior of the two, explains some of the declassified stuff, the other attempts to fend off the dino.
Forgive us
Kleenex
I got it!
Better off
After a few more run-ins
Two friends collectively hallucinate that their kleenex is alive and proceed to ask them for forgiveness; only one is forgiven and is better off for it, but assures their friend that they to will be forgiven soon.
The answer is cold, swift, and absolutely ridiculous.
++this
What the hell
Check the tags. Something that rhymes with “Shower Rooster Cod”.
sure, send me to potential spoilers.
Tree branches in mirror are more significant than they appear
*thumbs up*
Not spoilers so much as “where have you seen this before”
They’re playing hide-and-seek in the SEMMF HQ, the only “home tree” they could find was the ficus from Linda’s office.
….All I can hear is Eartha Kitt as Sal’s voice now. I dunno if that’s Damn You Willis or Thank You Willis.
definitely a thank
Sal with Yzma’s voice? Hmm. Although, I can *totally* hear Walky as Kronk! ;D
even with all available context it’s still sort of ridiculous
Shit just got real.
It’s completely past ridiculous and all the way to ludicrous.
It’s gone to plaid.
BRANCHTALITY
No wait, FATALITREE
I guess we can say that Sal comitted treechery.(I’ll show myself out)
You mean to say that you’re leafing us?
I’ve finally twigged to the fact that Sal is barking mad …
I will not stand fir this!
Such a betreeyal.
What a beech!
I don’t understand why these hoaky puns are so poplar around here.
A horrible treeitor.
Wood it make more sense if, instead of Sal’s previous indecisiveness, she was more deciduous?
Tree pun.

Gooble gobble, gooble gobble.
Considering how ridiculous it is, I think it holds up shockingly well from a dramatic standpoint.

…. wait, why isn’t the Rod tagged in THIS strip?
It is! It’s a normal tag, though, and not a character tag.
Aha. I am blind.
How the hell does Sal know what the Power Booster Rod even DOES or can DO? I never figured that out even on the first reading.
IIRC, the dots will get, if not connected, at least moved to within spitting distance of each other a year of comics later.
So, why isn’t the Power Booster Rod tagged?
It is. (right below FB button, where it says, “Tagss:”)
Someone needs to count how many times someone says “I win” (or “Ah win”) comic. Mr. Random?
^ That was supposed to say “…in this comic.”
I count at least once.
A+ job. Full of truth.
Did you have Jason make your bed
Just Professor Doc’s lab help
She’s asleep now
At long last!

Which of the three is asking for help burying something, though?

BLAM
She’s 21 and she doesn’t know where babies come from!
It stings a bit at first
A-Ah’m back.
Doog and Blair
A Slipshine where Joyce is taught all about reproduction, with multiple people bursting in on her and interrupting.
Panel 3 is a bit hard to see without a border.
Speaking as one who is not aware of the context, since this is my first time through anything pre-shortpacked!, it’s bafflingly ridiculous.
Oh no, she turned Professor Doc into a tree and is going to hit Head Alien with it!
…
Wait, that sounds like an improvement.
Here is… YOUR SHRUBBERY!
Good, now go get us another. Ne.
Odd, thought I’d hit the button to reply to 1958Fury…
