Does Head Alien actually have mandibles in there under his spacesuit helmet? Is that why those are manifesting? Maybe, I dunno. It’s possible he’s just trying to look more monstrous.
I mean giving the Aliens mandibles is kind of a bad idea since the Martians already have ’em and people get confused enough about the Aliens and Martians being separate species as it is…
Not sure how well mandibles would work with the chunky-looking silhouette that’s the only glimpse we ever get of Head Alien (or any Alien) without the suit. Willis’ commentary on that strip suggests they might have a texture similar to… Oscar the Grouch?
guys what if head alien was just oscar the grouch this whole time
Back when I was a hardcore continuity wonk for realsies I woulda (and probably did) take this as confirmation of actual Alien anatomy, but now that I’m only one for funsies and try to focus more on subtle nuances, the fact that the comic has up til now been consciously cagey about what’s going on under those suits takes precedence for me.
Within the main Walkyverse, Aliens Do Not Rule. However, we know that, in some universes, the dimension-hopping Head Alien II succeeded in killing his enemies, meaning that in those universes, Aliens Do Rule. We also know that, in all universes, Soggies May Rule, since the crisis at the end of Shortpacked! was seen to affect every universe including those which are fictional relative to the main Walkyverse.
Consider the case of universes where Aliens Do Rule:
If Aliens Are Soggies, then Soggies Do Rule. However, Soggies May Rule implies also that Soggies May Not Rule, which contradicts this. Therefore the statement “Aliens Are Soggies” is false.
If Aliens Are Not Soggies, then Soggies Do Not Rule, since Aliens Do Rule. However, this also contradicts the statement that Soggies May Rule. Therefore the statement “Aliens Are Not Soggies” is also false.
Since “Aliens Are Soggies” and “Aliens Are Not Soggies” are both false statements, it follows that Aliens May Be Soggies. However, if an Alien was seen suitless, it would confirm either that Aliens Are Soggies or Aliens Are Not Soggies, neither of which can be true. Therefore, Aliens cannot be seen without their suits.
tl;dr there is a non-zero chance that some universe’s version of joe has fucked a soggie
I believe some people have checked and the photo has actually been altered in the Legendary Edition to be less… bad. Will see if true once I get there I guess.
So maybe you teach an old dog new tricks.
Or it’s just “fashioned”

…but at the same time it also looks kinda cool?

Shouldn’t that be:
The Crisis at The End of Shortpacked!
I mean, if you don’t know…
I mean he already has size-shifting in play, what’s a little shapeshifting on top of it?
Besides, we all know that inside the suit is an awkwardly-Photoshopped stock photo of a model.
(… Legendary Edition just came out and I have Mass Effect on the mind right now.)
I believe some people have checked and the photo has actually been altered in the Legendary Edition to be less… bad. Will see if true once I get there I guess.
I don’t know why HAII didn’t just try to kill them himself in the first place. It probably would’ve been easier and a lot less time wasted.
But where would the showmanship in that be without the build-up?
I assumed he was taking on characteristics of a Martian
