NO mercy!
on November 4, 2013 at 12:01 amChapter: The Aliens Return
Location: Dina's dorm room, University Hospital
Hey, it’s the first appearance of Dina. Â She wouldn’t appear again for quite a while, nor would her being a student at Indiana University along with Joyce and the others ever be mentioned again.
She was created when some online biologist friends of mine were all “hey you should have a character who’s a cute girl and totally into dinosaurs.” Â And I was all “yes, that sounds like the best thing ever.” Â So I drew her up and eventually she worked her way into the comic. Â At first she was basically Mary in a hat. Â Dina being of Japanese descent and having socialization problems came later.
Her love of dinosaurs is her best quality.
I remember the first time I read through Roomies!, It’s Walkey! and Joyce & Walkey coming to the part where Dina first really becomes a part of the cast and insistently digging all the way back to this to be sure I wasn’t mistaken on how far before that she’d shown up.
When I started reading It’s Walky!, and read back through the Roomies! archives for background, this was the only time Dina had appeared. She didn’t show up again in IW! until months later, long after this brief appearance of some random girl had slipped my mind. I was shocked when, long afterwards, I think after the end of IW!, I read back through the whole thing and realized that this random girl was actually Dina.
She sleeps in the hat? Awesome.
She REALLY likes the hat.
You’ll have to pry it out of her cold dead hands before she’ll give it up.
As far as I know there is exactly one page of It’s Walky! where Dina is drawn without her hat.
…
Nope, she still has it, she’s just not wearing it. In her hands still counts. Hence the prying it out of them comment.
She takes her hat off for one thing, and one thing only.
And those two dinos on display REALLY like each other.
…what?
HA! That’s just made my night XD bravo for noticing, my good sir
Last-panel Dina in both universes! Woo!
Well, in one universe’s present, and another’s past. Then again the present of this universe does have a flashback to dinosaurs…………………
Would Dina like Beast Wars?
Technically Shortpacked! is not currently set in the Walkyverse.
How on earth do you figure that?!
Well, it’s currently at an arc that’s pretty much Beast Wars fan fiction. Did Beast Wars take place in the Walkyverse?
As Alex says, the storyline currently running on the Shortpacked! site is Beast Wars fanfic, set in one of the Transformers universes, not in the Walkyverse continuity.
Unless maybe it ends with a zoom out to Ethan playing with a snowglobe and his Transformers toys.
It’s DoA that’s an alt-universe. Roomies and Shortpacked! are in the same continuity.
The current Shortpacked! storyline is (presumably) not in the Shortpacked! continuity.
Unless Transformers Beast Wars takes place in The Walkyverse I’d say it’s pretty unlikely the current Shortpacked story is set in it.
It seems that, like the fandom, aliens can’t help being enthralled by Dina being Dina.
Her moe-ness transcends universes.
It’s the hat. In each universe the Dina finds the hat which best amplifies her power. Killing, devouring, and donning those with more suitable ones, until…. No one can resist her!
Who win in a battle of the hats Jedi master K’Kruhk , Cad Bane or Dina.
I’m pretty sure they’d all lose to Gilgamesh Wulfenbach: http://girlgenius.wikia.com/wiki/Magnificent_Hat
No one can resist the Dina.
Everyone do the Dinasaur.
Dammit, now it‘s stuck in my head!
…catchy, though.
Cute even then.
Seriously, unless it was spelt out for me, I wouldn’t have known this was Dina until maybe the third or fourth time I archived the comics.
I’m also finding it hilarious that the avatar above you has the same expression, and your avatar is the character Dina was originally based on. It’s the little things, truly.
Dina was not based on Mary. Mary didn’t exist yet.
I’m finding it incredibly hilarious one of the most popular characters was based on one of the most hated.
Heh, that is pretty funny.
She wasn’t really based on Mary – Mary didn’t exist yet. They just looked very similar.
Then it’s hilarious that one of the most hated character was based off one of the (later on) most popular ?
People hate Mary? I thought people mostly ignore Mary.
When we have to acknowledge her existence, we hate her. The rest of the time it’s pretty much ignoring her.
Like Shrek 4!
I-I don’t think I ever realized this was Dina until now. I’m surprisingly unobservant. Holy Crap It’s Fall!?
And she was indeed, the best thing ever. ;;;;;;;;;;;;
I really need to remember when I started reading It’s Walky seriously, after originally blowing it off based on the early Nachitos storyline and some unappealing toilet humor.
Hooray, Dina! Even the Aliens can’t bring themselves to harm her…

Wait so hold on, why was Dexter trying to kill the abductees here? Wasn’t his whole plan with them to make them into a brainwashed army? Or was he intentionally giving his troops false orders in order to set himself up to be captured and enact Year Zero from there?
