Danny is opening up about experiencing symptoms of depression and a developing alcohol problem. Mary’s reaction is open condemnation. Staggering.
I suppose going purely by the dialogue in this comic you could interpret her as having that “how dare you do this to yourself, what are you thinking” angry compassion and worry that people with drug problems may get from actual friends and family, but context clues suggest that Mary has never experienced a feeling of compassion in her life.
Taken at face value, Mary looks like a concerned person here. Someone who is truly shocked by her friends behavior and wants to help. All she knows to do is cuss him out.
But then, at 18, would you sit down with a friend and say: “you are exhibiting signs of depression and possible alcoholism”?
Or would you say ‘Damn Dude, this ain’t the answer? And throw a couple cuss words at him to straighten out his act.?”
Or would you actually be smart enough to go talk to his parents and get him help?
Hard to do that when your a kid yourself.
And from what we ‘know’ of Mary, she will not go to his parents but take it on herself to lecture him.

“I rationalize it by thinking that anything you hate has to be good.”
“Oh no, Mary will swear at me if I drink, I guess I’d better drink to cope with that.”
It’s easy to throw stones at problems you’ve only heard about. It’s why I don’t read Least I Could Do any more.
I have not heard much about that one. What’s it like?
Depends how much you like jerk ass gary stu self insert characters
Oh come on, it’s not that bad. It does have some funny stuff. Looking for Group is much better, however.
He did an arc back in 2008 about how ADHD is just because parents are lazy and if they give their kids Ritalin, it’ll turn the kid into a crack whore.
Also, the newspaper industry died back in 09 because their owners ride dinosaurs and didn’t buy their readers free nooks.
And that’s just the top of the iceberg.
I have ADHD. The guy who writes that comic can fucking burn.
“You put down that Gosh-Darn beer now, mister!
Heck!”
Did Danny just straight up pop the cap off the bottle with his thumb and forefinger? ‘Cuz damn.
I think it’s already been established that Danny has beer based super powers.
This is true.

Also Joyce has redeeming qualities.
And isn’t a huge hypocrite like Mary… but I’ll hush about that for the sake of people who haven’t read these yet.
When Willis was drawing WPaS, there must have been a little shoulder Mary peering over him going “How on EARTH do you rationalize this?”
She must have been REAL easy to ignore.
Or swat.
i’m just impressed that danny pulled off that bottle cap with the tips of his fingers.
Probably twisted it off. College students aren’t known for buying expensive beer.
If this is how Mary cheers people up regularly, I don’t blame Danny for being driven to drink.

Willis, did you have a similar experience (with Danny and/or Mary) with alcohol? Or was it a fairly regular one, all things considered?
Alternate line for Danny in Panel 2:
“Malt does more than Milton can
To justify God’s ways to Man.”
Spoiler: She doesn’t actually cuss him out. Not even with above-the-numbers symbols.
Somehow I think Mary is acting a bit like Billie in these last strips, I don’t know.
