Ya but one thing I never liked about him is that he talks WAY to much, this page being a good example, not even the joker monologues as much as he does.
Only because the Joker is easily board. Most villains both love the sound of their own voice, and love to tell everyone how smart they are. The ones that don’t do all that, they are the truly dangerous ones.
He talks a LOT, yeah, but generally speaking the breaking speech part is strong enough that a little wisecracking in between his ripping your head to metaphorical shreds is forgivable.
Even in a scene like this. The banter to takedown ratio’s a bit higher than I’d like, but at the same time it works that he’s so casually saying “Yeah. I win because I know you well enough that I will tell you just how you fail.” And after the previous three encounters the audience has had with him* (The bar fight, Joyce’s capture, and the mindwipe), which he either got leverage from or actually won? Yeah, the seeds are there that this is a character flaw that’ll bite him in the ass later, but it worked so well last time he can get a pass here.
* Discounting his very first appearance because it’s a single line in a single panel before it’s clear the wacky alien subplot is not going to stay just a wacky subplot, not an appearance as a villain.
In this case I think it’s fear people will die on his (already against orders) choice in the one hand, and the other being the side effects of HA’s Breaking Speech Attack. (The opponent flinches and is subsequently paralyzed! It’s super-effective!)
Okay, not that my opinion matters, but honestly Head Alien will always be one of my top ten villains.
Typically you get cartoon villains (this definitely is more true of kids cartoons, though) to fall into three major categories:
One:
Buffoon forever, like Draken from Kim Possible. He is always foiled, and no matter how many smart things he can build or invent he is still portrayed as, well, less then menacing due to incompetence.
Two:
The villain that is actually a decent person underneath, or like, there is more to them than meets the eye. This is your whole “Ice-king-from-adventure -is-actually-Simon” Kinda dealio.
Three:
“The ultimate evil” sort of villain. Darkness incarcerate from some dimension that in the end, because the hero is super awesome ends up not as intimating as they where supposed to be. A trend seen everywhere, even in Adult media stuff.
The head Alien isn’t any of those, though. He is kind of the reverse the first. Instead of a person “trying to be menacing” and coming off as goofy… he is so goofy that you don’t get what a heavy hitter he can be. He is the one who shoots the hero in the back because the hero underestimated him. He is such a stereotype of what villainy is portrayed as, that nobody is ready for some of the heavy hitting he does.
Its amazing to see someone who SHOULD be the incompetent villain do the things Head Alien does. It’s exciting to watch.
As a new IW! reader whose only familiarity with Head Alien is from the best Shortpacked arc ever, his mind games are easily what I’m looking forward to about this comic the most.
(Yes, I know that one was HAII, but I don’t really know the difference yet)
He is quite good at the manipulationaries.
I like that in a villain.

I don’t know, I actually quite enjoy that about him

Head Alien makes every scene better. That’s a fact.
Hot Dog!
Yeah he is definitely one of the happier villains.
Gotta love it.
That last panel was my fb cover photo for months.
For a diabolical evil mastermind he does have a habit of making me smile
Why… why do they always let him talk?
Just punt the bastard…
Actually that’d be a good commission to request. HA getting punted football style.

Later occasions have no such excuse though, seriously guys, shoot him, kick him in the visor, do something.
Head games, not a bad strategy.
Head games for the Head Alien.
Seriously, 2nd panel is the best.

It’s very much in passing…but is this the first mention of the cheese here?
God, he is such a bastard. I love him.
