Ethan’s probably moving out
on November 10, 2021 at 12:01 amChapter: Leslie NOPEs!, Merger and Restructuring
Location: Leslie's house
New storyline: “Leslie NOPEs!” Many of you know what you’re in for.
This is Leslie’s house! Robin bought it for her with illicit corporate donations she amassed back when she was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. It’s paid for, so it’s not like there’s a mortgage or anything, but, you know, property taxes.
just staring at those two middle panels of roz’s head turning and how it absolutely doesn’t work
Hey, this is early! (DST yada yada) And much larger than presented on Shortpacked! these days. That probably explains why Roz’s head suddenly looks weird.
Ha ha, I remember trying to figure out what “Leslie NOPEs” meant, because I was unfamiliar with both the slang and the Parks and Rec character. I thought it was some sort of acronym.
does the car pay taxes?
I mean, probably. She has an income.
Although she is an asshole… so 50/50 really.
Assholes are still expected to pay taxes.
The more relevant fact would be that her parents are billionaire technocrats, who tend to be much more able to dodge taxes than most people.
Is she a U.S. citizen?
She was “born” in the United States, so if she has personhood status then yes.
Here we go. I’m prepared to get really emotional on this revisit. I don’t know if I could narrow down a single* favorite storyline out of everything you’ve ever written– but out of Shortpacked!? It’s this.
(*I’m counting this and “Same Planet Different Dementia” as a single story, because they basically are, just with a gap for holiday filler)
Same and same. With the caveat that, because I started reading with Shortpacked? The only real competition for my favorite storyline is the leadup to the Final Shortpacked Wedding. No contest. I love DoA, and I’d be hard-pressed to choose a favorite single strip, but as an overall arc this one has everything I love most – action, character developments, fight scenes as expression of character arc, and of course, that wonderful final strip. Also, Leslie is probably my favorite Walkyverse character given when I came in, and her DoA counterpart being a teacher kind of necessarily reduces her screentime, which also means her Walkyverse counterpart is still very much her ‘real’ one in my head. It is what it is, and I don’t mind it, but I have so eagerly been awaiting this chance to revisit this arc.
agreed. I think Willis is at his best when writing sci-fi stories.
The “everyone lives together happily” era of shortpacked was short-lived.
Ha. Get it? “Short”-lived?
Eh, it looks fine.
It looks fine as long as your brain is parsing her arm as the back of the couch instead. Once you remember it’s her arm then her shoulder’s been horribly mutilated.
It’s not that unusual a pose, assuming Roz has the upper half of her body turned to face Leslie.
“Pretty soon it’ll just be you, me, and the car.”
People unfamiliar with the backstory may find that line odd.
Huh. I’d completely forgotten Robin had gotten elected here as well as in the Dumbingverse. Been too long.
Ethan’s thousand-yard stare in the first panel foreshadows Emothan.
I did some digging into what big houses like that cost in SF in 2008 when Robin bought (maybe a million or 1.5, given the real estate crash) and what the property tax bill for such a house would have been in 2012. Answer, about $1,500 a month. Pretty sweet for so many people.
There’s repairs and maintenance, of course, but I can’t see any of the gang budgeting for that. Robin probably dips into the petty cash like she did for the house.
Wait, is Ultra Car still a car at this point?
Yep, she gets a new body directly after this pair of storylines.
Forgot how much more fun (for my personal opinions and tastes) Shortpacked era Roz was over her DOA counterpart.
