Cute
on February 19, 2015 at 12:01 amWeird personal boundary and harassment issues set aside, this strip reminds me of my evolving panel composition pet peeves. See the first panel, with all the space at the bottom, and then the art shifting down in the second panel to fit dialog in at the top? These days, I’d move that first panel art down, keeping the blank area placement consistent. It kind of annoys me when art shifts around from panel to panel to accommodate dialog. I mean, it’s okay if the “camera angle” changes, but if it’s just a shot like Sal there at the table being repeated, I think she should be placed the same in each panel that camera angle appears. Composition in otherwise unchanging panels being shifted up and down to fit word balloons is like fingernails on a chalkboard.
Ya just can’t loose with that guy, can ya?
I believe the correct phrase is that she can’t win no matter what.
No, he’s pretty uptight.
Well, Willis, you did draw the table at a different angle in the second panel, so the camera’s direction did change and it was more than just a pan. But that doesn’t mean I don’t agree with you.
It looks like the same angle to me.
Actually, this makes it look like you zoomed or dollied in for a tighter focus on Sal and Jason. The shifting of the whitespace seems appropriate under those circumstances.
My god Jason’s a dick.
And the sky is blue, soooo?
You misspelled purple there.
Make that vanilla.
The sky is clearly octarine.
Sal? Sal, you’re freaking me out there.
Okay, so in panel 1, Jason’s doing a Mike-entrance, and in panel 3 Sal’s imitating Joyce… Fair enough. It’s Jason’s sarcastic grin in the last panel that gets me. That just… doesn’t seem right somehow.
He’s moved on to a Joe impersonation?
Totally unrelated question: I know the Walkiverse and the Dumbiverse are two separate universes, but the Walkiverse already contains a whole bunch of universes, some of them by different authors. Are the Walkiverse and the Dumbiverse part of the same multiverse?
Yes.
I’m pretty sure in Shortpacked! we saw the Dumbiverse as an alternate universe, so yes.
CREEPIEST SAL EVER.
She’s channeling Joyce.
Or has been possessed by her. Take your pick.
Yeah, creepy. Joyces ‘triangle smile’ just doesn’t get it on Sal’s face.
Man, how did Sal just not immediately fall for that level of charm?
I dunno, I kinda like it more when the compositions vary from panel to panel, even if it’s basically the same perspective. It keeps things more dynamic and as such slightly easier to read.
Well, not easier, but more… relaxing? fresh? I dunno.
I think it gives the impression that we’re moving in towards Sal at the same time Jason is. We (along with Jason) spy her from afar, and then move in to speak with her.
And her spiteful mania is just missing something to place on her head to be high-school-Sal, demanding attention.
uggggggggggggh jason
holy shit I just realized I hate IW! Jason as much as I hate Mary
At least Jason gets somewhat better some years from here. When we get to Mary again, she’s still the same.
Yeah. From what I can recall, he was still kind of a dick in the later IW! strips, but in a “complex and flawed character” kind of a way where it was sort of sympathetic and he also had good qualities, not this pure distilled godawfulness.
He’s being annoying, not godawful.
I think telling someone who has numerous deaths on her conscience & is basically an orphan that she’s cute when she’s withdrawn & angsty qualifies as godawful.
Come on Jason, don’t be a dick.
If you swap two words, I’m fairly certain that advice was given in the Bat-Family at some point.
+1
Although if I’m going to be pedantic, I don’t think there was ever a time where Grayson acted nearly as stupid as Jason Friggin’ Todd.
