Be careful
on September 26, 2012 at 12:01 amThis strip was one of the speedbumps of the cartooning learning process. For some reason that day I thought it was important to show Danny getting ready for school. Because if he’s suddenly shown sitting in a class in a godforsaken college webcomic, everyone will be confused.
Don’t get me wrong. There are times when it’s beneficial to show this stuff. Sometimes it works better for pacing, or it gives important character information. But this strip is definitely neither. I could have accomplished the same thing by just starting with a wider shot of the classroom in the first panel of tomorrow’s strip.
But he forgot his extra triple-thick condom.
You never know.
I’m sure this wasn’t intended in the ultra-small version, but getting to see every little detail in close-up like this makes the indent in Joe’s eye-line look like he’s wincing.
Yeah, I think that’s just a blotty pen.
Joes right look both ways them university drivers crazy and drunk
At my university, we just had the same girl get hit by the same truck three times in three places in one day. I guess my college town breeds a special kind of crazy driver.
Dear god that opens up a lot of questions. How does someone get hit by cars three times in one day? Wouldn’t you be really careful after the first? How does a driver hit people three times in one day? Wouldn’t you be really careful after the first? Are we sure this isn’t a pathetic ploy by someone who’s seen too many bad rom-coms? And how long until someone tries to turn that story into a bad rom-com?
… I don’t think that’s crazy driver, I think that’s attempted murder.
I would be very, very suspicious on the second time…. at the third I would just think the one who wants me dead is very, very inept.
In my experience at school, the pedestrians are crazy and/or drunk if I’m driving. But if I’m walking, it’s totally the drivers who are crazy and/or drunk.
Oh my goodness, Willis, it just struck me that this could have been the first strip up on the Roomies! website. Suddenly I see why you’re so happy with the phone call one instead.
Although I guess this could have lent itself to lots of fun parodies for anniversaries.
I guess that answers my question about who’s class was at 2:30
Oh yeah I just bought Joyce and Walky, this is gonna take up my day.
Finished (as far as
I can be anyway)
But at least this panel shows Joe’s attitude of I’m-not-your-mother towards Danny.
Look both ways, sprint across, don’t trust crosswalks, don’t trust stop signs, don’t trust traffic lights, don’t trust cars to be moving in the appropriate direction for the lane, don’t trust the first three feet of sidewalk, and if someone trips just consider them dead and keep moving. That is how you survive crossing the street on a college campus.
You know as unneeded as Danny’s Batman Forever suit up is I do like Joe’s sarcastic punchline.
I actually like this kind of slow introduction and getting a feel of the characters. The only thing I’d have changed is make the first 4 panels actually say something about him, anything – maybe he’s a sleaze (messy bed), reads comic books (they are in the same pile as his textbooks), etc. The one with the keys and the poster can stay.
